7、elist and a representative of realism with his novels vividly reflecting the realities of the 19th century in British society. The Oliver Twist was one of his masterpieces, which describes lower social-class peoples life conditions in London, especially the thieves evil life. Among the characters in

8、 the novel, Nancy is not an important one, but she is different from other thieves in the group. Although she lives an evil theft life, Nancy is kindhearted to the boy Oliver Twist, which is worth discussing. There is a conflict between Nancys behaviors and her complex inner world, or it is full of

9、good and evil conflict. Nowadays, many scholars in our country have made research and discussion about Nancy in Oliver Twist. However, most of them just made research and discussion about her general character, such as the contradiction and complexity of her theft evils and kindheartedness. However,

10、 what has caused her to live as a woman thief with a different character from other thieves? In order to explore deeply the change and formation of Nancys character, the discussion and analysis of Nancy should be further and thorough. The writer thinks the contradiction and complexity of Nancys thef

Charles Dickens and his Oliver Twist2.1 A Brief Introduction to Charles DickensCharles Dickens (1812-1870) was the most popular British novelist of the Victorian period, and many of his n

13、ovels were very popular because he advocated in his works the social change and reform. He was considered one of the best English novelists of the 19th century. As a conscious writer at his time, he created many literary works exposing the wretchedness of the downtrodden, expressing his anger at the

14、 heartless oppression. Although Dickens was baptized and reared in a Church of England, he was a nominal Anglican for his whole life. He associated himself with Religion until the end of his life. Early experience with Dissenters gave him a lifelong aversion to evangelical zeal, doctrinal disputatio

15、n and sectarianism. Equally unsympathetic with High Church Anglicanism, he feared that the Oxford movement might lead England back to Roman Catholicism. He began to work as a solicitors clerk. In the evenings, he taught himself shorthand, which helped him to work as a reporter. First, he worked in D

16、octors Commons law courts from 1829 to 1831, and then steno-graphed various parliamentary debates for London newspapers from 1832 to 1834. In 1834, Dickens began to publish humorous and satirical essays in magazines with the pseudonym Boz, and some of these were collected and published in his first book Sketches
