2、0secondsandrecordTheexaminerplacesthepadofhisindex,middleandringfingersovertheradialartery.Ifproperlydone,theexaminershouldbeabletofeelthearterypulsatingundertheexaminerfingertips.Theradialpulsemaybemeasuredfor30seconds,thenthepulseperminutecanbefoundbymultiplyingbytwo.Attentionshouldalsobepaidtothe
3、rhythm.Theexaminershouldnotusehisthumbtopalpateanypulse.5.Palpatebothradial(wrist)pulsessimultaneouslyforsymmetryforatleast30seconds6.Measurerespiratoryratefor30secondsandrecordTheexaminerunobtrusivelymeasurespatientrespiratoryrate.Thismaybeaccomplishedbytheexaminerleavinghishandsonthepatientwristsf

5、achposition,thearteryinwhichthebloodpressureistobemeasuredshouldbeattheleveloftheheart(atthelevelofthefourthintercostalspaceinthesittingposition;atthelevelofthemiddleaxillarylineinthelyingposition).Thepatientarmshouldberestingonasmoothtableorsupportedbytheexaminer,andslightlyflexedattheelbow.8.Place
6、cuffincorrectlocation2-3cmabovetheatecubitalcreaseTheexaminersecuresthebloodpressurecuffsnuglyovertheupper,armsothatonefingercanbeadmittedunderthecuff.Thecuffshouldbepositioned23cmabovetheantecubitalcreaseorelbowjoint.Putthemiddleofthecuffoverthebrachialartery.9.PalpatebrachialarteryTheexaminercanlo
7、catethebrachialarterywhichliesslightlymedialtothetendonofthebicepsmuscleintheantecubitalfossa.Themercurycolumnonthemanometerdialshouldbeproperlycalibratedwiththepointerat0”beforethecuffisinflated(i.e.,alltheairshouldbepressedoutofthecuffbeforeitisinflated).Thestethoscopeisplacedfirmlyoverthebrachial

9、econd.Thenumberwheretheexaminerhearsthefirstpulsesoundisthesystolicpressure.Thepulsesoundwillwakenandthendisappear.Thenumberwherethepulsesounddisappearsisthediastolicpressure.Ifthediffereneebetweenweakeningofthesoundanditsdisappearaneeis2.6kPa(20mmHg)orgreater,theexaminershouldrecordthesetwonumbers.
