The lava rocks form walls, many of them built by her great-great-great-grandfather and his brothers, and

11、 these walls have been enclosing cattle for generations. Some are more than 200 years old.As the fifth generation in a family of Hawaiian cowboys, DeeDee would rather spend the day riding horses. But, more often than not, weekends find her and her family checking and fixing the miles of rock walls.

12、The family still goes across much of the ranch (大牧场) on horseback, because many areas are too rocky to be accessible by a vehicle. “I always wanted to be a cowboy when I grew up,” she says. “When thats all you know, its kind of hard to do anything else.”Her family raises around 200 head of cattle on

13、 1,000 acres of land. DeeDees relatives also fish, hunt wild pigs, raise chickens and grow vegetables. Oral histories passed from generation to generation link DeeDees ancestors to this area long before they started to raise cattle here. “When were on the land, its a very close relationship because

Island visitors are more likely to associate the Hawaiian landscape with sun and surf, and few probably realize the paniolos (牧人) were raising cattle in the islands uplands decades before cowboys started riding horses in the American West. Mexican cowboys were brought to Hawaii around 1830 to teach native Hawaiians how to tame the cattle running wild after being brought to the islands in 1793.The paniolos worked on ranches across the Hawaiian Islands. The first significant one, Parker Ranch, was founded on the Big Island in
