1、 五柳先生传 陶渊明先生不知何许人也，亦不详其姓字,宅边有五柳树，因以为号焉。闲静少言，不慕荣利。好读书，不求甚解；每有会意，便欣然忘食。性嗜酒，家贫,不能常得。亲旧知其如此，或置酒而招之；造饮辄尽，期在必醉。既醉而退，曾不吝情去留。环堵萧然，不蔽风日；短褐穿结，箪瓢屡空，晏如也。常著文章自娱，颇示己志。忘怀得失，以此自终。 赞曰：黔娄之妻有言：“不戚戚于贫贱，不汲汲于富贵。”其言兹若人之俦乎？衔觞赋诗，以乐其志。无怀氏之民欤？葛天氏之民欤？译文1. Mr. Wu Lius Biography It is unknown where this gentleman comes from and
2、what his name is. As there are five willows by his cottage, he calls himself Wu Liu (five pronounced wu in Chinese , and willow liu - trans.). He is, by nature, a quiet and reticent man, uninterested in fame and fortune. He takes delight in reading, but he does not bother much about minor details as
3、 he reads; when he awakens to some understanding, he so rejoices that he forgets his meals. Though he is fond of drinking, he cannot afford to drink as often as he wishes owing to domestic circumstances. His relatives and friends, aware of his plight, will invite him over for a drink from time to ti
4、me. He will go and drink as much as to get tipsy. Being tipsy, he frankly takes leave of his host, not caring what they think. His small cottage with its dilapidated walls can hardly provide shelter from weather. His short coat of coarse cloth is patched over and over, and he often finds himself wit
5、hout enough food to eat and, yet, he takes it philosophically. He takes to writing and he writes for pleasure and expression of his will. He wishes to live the rest of his life by putting out of his mind worldly worries about gains or losses. A supplementary remark: the ancient scholar Qian Lous wif
6、e once said of her husband: “ He is not worried about poverty and inferiority, nor desirous of fortune and rank.” A careful interpretation of this remark shows that this Qian Lou was the likes of Wu Liu, wasnt he? As he drinks to please himself and writes to express his will, dont you think he is li

He delights in study but does not seek abstruse explanations. Whenever there is something of which he apprehends the meaning, then in his happin
9、ess he forgets to eat. By nature he is fond of wine, but his family is poor and he cannot usually get it. His relatives and friends know that this is so, and sometimes set out wine and invite him. Whenever he goes to a party, he will drink to the end. He expects that he will certainly get drunk. Whe
10、n he is drunk, he will withdraw, but never regret that he must go. His house with surrounding walls only a few paces long is lonely and does not shelter him from wind and sun. His short coarse robe is torn and mended. His dishes and gourds are often empty. Yet he is at peace. He constantly delights
11、himself with writing in which he widely expresses his own ideals. He is unmindful of gain or loss, and thus he will be to the end. The Appraisal: Qian Lou had a saying: One does not grieve over poverty and low position, one is not concerned about riches and high rank. May we think he was speaking of

14、 Drinking is his natural weakness, but, being poor, he cannot afford to buy wine. Knowing it well, his relatives and friends are wont to provide some for him to share. Then he finishes every drop and does not stop till quite drunk. While tipsy, he leaves them without more ado.Four bare walls enclose

Sometimes he writes to amuse himself, to express what is in his mind. He cares little for worldly gain or loss. It is thus he passes his
16、 alloted span on earth. EnvoyWise old Chien-lou once remarked: “Not to be dejected though poor and humble, nor eager for riches and honour.” Is this not a fitting epithet for a man like him?
