2、schooltomakemoneyCentury。Heworkedhardinmanydifferentjobs.Later,Jackreturnedtoschool.Butdidntstaylong.Intheyear1897,hewetoAlaskatofindgold.Insteadofgettingmuchgold,hefoundideasforhisbooksandstories.Hewentbackhomeandbegantowrite.HiswritingwerewarmlywelcomedandhebecamerichandfamouswhenhewasunderthirtyJ

3、ackLondonhaswrotten19novels,150shortstoriesandnumerousarticlesintheliteraturereportset,essaysandpapers.Themoregoodthere,CalloftheWild(1903),WhiteTeeth(1906),biglight(1910),MoonValley(1913),BlackMexicanpeople(1913),andLeninappreciatedbytheLoveofLife(1906).Butbythelate,hecameoutofsocialstruggle,inorde

4、rtomeetthepublisherstomeettheindividualneedsandalsowrotealotofmaterialcomfortsshoddywork.In1916JackLondonjustlikeMartinEdeninhismasterpiece,whoistheheroinhisnovel,andfinallykilledhimselfinthespiritofthegreatemptinessanddespairofsuicide.ThemaincontentsAtthebeginningof20thcentury,manynewwritersemerged

5、withtheintroductionofmanynewideas.Amongthem,JackLondonwasthemostpopularone.Hismostfamousnovelisthecallofthewild(野性的呼唤).Althoughitisastoryaboutadog,Buck,itvividlydepictsthelifeintheprimitiveNorthwherepeoplerushedforgoldandfortune.Buck,themaincharacter,isa140lbSaintBernard/ScotchShepherdcross,whichgiv

6、eshimtheappearanceofanexceptionallylargedog.BuckleadsacomfortablelifeasthepetofJudgeMillerintheSantaClaraValleyofNorthernCalifornia.JudgeMillersgardenersassistant,Manuel,abductsthedogandsellshimtoatrainerofsleddogs,whichwereingreatdemandduetothediscoveryofayellowmetalinthefrozenlandsoftheYukon.Slowl

7、yintroducedtothebrutalityofhisnewlife,BuckisforcedtosurviveandadapttoconditionsinAlaskaandtheYukon.Heworkspullingsledswithotherdogs,learnstostealfood,andengagesinpowerstrugglewithotherdogsfortheleadpositioninthesledteam.Hisownerssoonlearnthateventhoughhisenemy,Spitz,isadevil,Buckistwodevils.Hebecome
