2、y theory. His works have a great impact in France and around the world. Novel Les Miserables is one of the most important works of Victor Hugo. In this novel, Hugo portrayed the features of this stage from Napoleons defeat at Waterloo to a popular uprising against the July Monarchy historical, drawi

3、ng a large-scale picture of the social and political life. The book describes the tragedy of three central figures about Jean Valjean, who is an escaping convict and Fantine, who is fugitive in the street and her daughter Cosette. The book reveals that good and simple working people living in the ca

4、pitalist society are doomed to accept an inevitable fate where they are oppressed, discriminated, and insulted. The author angrily denounced and accused of reasons causing all these unreasonable and unfair phenomenons.Jean Valjean was young and diligent, but he did not find the job all the time. He

5、stealed a piece of bread to give his nephew, so as to stayed in jail for nineteen years. At first, he was sentenced to be in prison for five years only, but he often escaped from the prison because he did not trust the law, so his crime became serious. When he left the prison, Jean Valjean burdened

6、with the prisoners identity, and suffered discrimination of others. Social injustice and exclusion, made him have no hope and confidence to become a good man. But Bishop Myriel was the only one person who was willing to accept him, and he influenced Jean Valjean by his kindness and love. Even though

7、 Jean Valjean even wanted to kill him some time, bishops broad mind moved him, because the bishop dared to sleep with a convict. Finally, Jean Valjean stealed the silverware away. When he was arrested by policemen, the bishop did not testified him, instead, he gave another two silverwares to him, an

8、d he said to Jean Valjean: “you do not forget that you have promised for me to be an honest person by using these silverwares to change the money.” Just for the word of the bishop, Jean Valjean determined to be a kind person, and kept his promise to be a person with honesty, universal love and the u

9、pright. When he came to the city Mengte Yi, he renamed Madeleine, revolutionized the gem production process, ran the factories, and became millionaires. He was concerned about the poor, did something good for them, and was elected mayor. Jean Valjean let go, risking to rescue Fushi Le Wang held down

10、 by the carriage, and put him to a monastery in Paris as a gardener. Fantine was a worker in the factory of Jean Valjean, because of having an illegitimate daughter, she was forced to leave there. Later, she died in humiliation and sick, leaving orphan Cosette, who was maltreated in the house of The

11、nardier. The inspector Javert who suspected Madeleine was the escaping convict, was always against him. There was a light offense who was mistaken as Jean Valjean. Jean Valjean was unwilling to let other person on behalf of himself to suffer the pain, so he surrendered in court and so was again impr

12、isoned, sentenced to life imprisonment. In Toulon harbor, because of the opportunity to save a sailor, he jumped into the sea to escape. he went to the home of Thenardier , and rescued Cosette from there. They rented a house to stay in Paris, and they have been dependent to each other. By accident,

13、they encountered Fushi Le Wang, and then Jean Valjean sheltered as the brother of the gardener. Soon after, Cosette met her lover, called Marius who later attended uprising against the dynasty. When he was injured, Jean Valjean saved him. They were married finally. But when Marius knew Jean Valjean

14、was an escaping convict, he insulted Jean Valjean, and refused him to see Cosette again. When Marius found Jean Valjean was just his savior, namely, respectable Madeleine major, he went to visit Jean Valjean with the Cosette, but it was late because of Jean Valjean being dying. At that time, Marius

15、was very regretful.Even though he experienced so much sickness and pains, Jean Valjean still always said: “everything has passed away!” I have been moved by his crazy heart of justice. He was a mayor and had numerous assets, but he donated the vast majority of the money to charities and poor people.

16、 He often went out with full of money in the pockets, but came back time with empty pockets. In addition, he often gave the bread to starving people , gave the clothes to people who was cold; he went to every place to visit the poor. For the poor, he was like an umbrella, and an embodiment of justice. Though Jean Valjean tried every effort to help others, and wanted to do some good things to make up for his past sins committed,
