Love Your Life Henry David Thoreau However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not as bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The faultfinder will find faults in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poor-house. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man's abode; the snow melts before its door as early in the spring. I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts, as in a palace. The town's poor seem to me often to live the most independent lives of any. Maybe they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supported by the town; but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means, which should be more disreputable. Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old, return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts. mean 低劣, 出身寒微 shun 躲避, 故意避开 call … names 辱骂某人; 用各种难听的话骂(某人) call over the names 点名 thrilling 使人感动的; 使人激动的 poor house 济贫院 almshouse 救济院或养老院 abode 住所 but = except; not but = only contented 知足的,满意的;惬意的,甘心情愿的 independent 独立的; 自治的;不愿受约束的; 不受控制的; 有主见的 misgiving 疑虑, 担忧, 不安 disreputable 声名狼藉, 破烂不堪 herb 药草, 香草 sage 贤人, 圣人 不论你的生活如何卑微,面对它活下去,不要逃避,也不要恶言咒骂。
