7、andseemedamusedatthiscertaininterpretationofthepoemasinspirational.LiteralinterpretationAccordingtotheliteral(andmorecommon)interpretation,thepoemisinspirational,apaeantoindividualismandnon-conformism.Thepoemconsistsoffourstanzas.Inthefirststanza,thespeakerdescribeshisposition.Hehasbeenoutwalkingint
8、hewoodsandcomestotworoads,andhestandslookingasfardowneachoneashecansee.Hewouldliketotryoutboth,butdoubtshecoulddothat,sothereforehecontinuestolookdowntheroadsforalongtimetryingtomakehisdecisionaboutwhichroadtotake.IronicinterpretationTheironicinterpretation,widelyheldbycritics,15isthatthepoemisinste

11、thosewhomightthinkIwouldyetlivetobesorryforthewayIhadtakeninlife.Everyoneisatraveler,choosingtheroadstofollowonthemapoftheircontinuousjourney,life.Thereisneverastraightpaththatleavesonewithbutasoledirectioninwhichtohead.RegardlessoftheoriginalmessagethatRobertFrosthadintendedtoconvey,hispoem,TheRoad
12、NotTaken,hasleftitsreaderswithmanydifferentinterpretations.Itisonespast,presentandtheattitudewithwhichhelooksuponhisfuturethatdeterminestheshadeofthelightthathewillseethepoemin.Inanycasehowever,thispoemclearlydemonstratesFrostsbeliefthatitistheroadthatonechoosesthatmakeshimthemanwhoheis.AndsorryIcou
13、ldnottravelboth.Itisalwaysdifficulttomakeadecisionbecauseitisimpossiblenottowonderabouttheopportunitycost,whatwillbemissedouton.Thereisastrongsenseofregretbeforethechoiceisevenmadeanditliesintheknowledgethatinonelifetime,itisimpossibletotraveldowneverypath.Inanattempttomakeadecision,thetravelerlooks
14、downoneasfarasIcould.Theroadthatwillbechosenleadstotheunknown,asdoesanychoiceinlife.Asmuchhemaystrainhiseyestoseeasfartheroadstretches,eventuallyitsurpasseshisvisionandhecanneverseewhereitisgoingtolead.Itisthewaythathechoosesherethatsetshimoffonhisjourneyanddecideswhereheisgoing.Thentooktheother,jus
15、tasfair,andhavingperhapsthebetterclaim.Whatmadeithavethebetterclaimisthatitwasgrasslandwantedwear.Itwassomethingthatwasobviouslynotforeveryonebecauseitseemedthatthemajorityofpeopletooktheotherpaththereforehecallsittheroadlesstraveledby.Thefactthatthetravelertookthispathoverthemorepopular,secureonein
16、dicatesthetypeofpersonalityhehas,onethatdoesnotwanttonecessarilyfollowthecrowdbutdomoreofwhathasneverbeendone,whatisnewanddifferent.Andboththatmorningequallylayinleavesnostephadtroddenblack.Theleaveshadcoveredthegroundandsincethetimetheyhadfallennoonehadyettopassbyonthisroad.PerhapsFrostdoesthisbecauseeachtimeapersoncomestothepointwheretheyhavetomakeachoice,iti
