材料工程留学条件入学要求_第1页

MIT材料工程博士 2014个人申请总结(世毕盟学员)我发现我们化院中材料方向的同学比较少,而材料跟化学的联系又很密切,是许 多化院同学可以考虑申请的方向我拿到offer后就一直想写一篇申请总结,给 师弟师妹们一个参考一、个人背景和申请结果GPA: 3.72 (本研出成绩后是3.73),院里排8/144科研:先后在马丁老师和黄富强老师组科研,大二升大三的暑假在密歇根 人学(安娜堡)的Prof. Stephen Maldonado组交流我做的课题比较碰巧,在三 个组的工作基本都与电化学相关我在葡萄糖的电催化氧化方面(马老师指导) 发了一篇Materials Letters -作;在超级电容器方而(黄老师指导)一篇四作投 T Nature,自己还有一篇一作小文,但这两篇文章在中请时都未发出推荐信:三位科研的指导老师和两位北人小班课任课老师标准化考试GRE: V157、Q167、AW3.0; GRE Chemistry: 99%; TOEFL: 102 (口语24) ; IELTS: 7.0 (MIT材料系要雅思,不过现在似乎开始放开了)Offer: MIT^ Cornell 和 Noithwestem 材料系二、化学申材料卜•面谈谈个人对材料科学与工程的看法,若有失偏颇请指止。

请注意我说 “化学申材料”,而没冇说“传材料”,是因为我看到材料跟化学有较大的交集,这 个交集甚至大于化学和化工材料一般是指有一定用途的固体,显然它们是化学 物质,而且许多用来描述它们的语言我们应该不陌生:电子排布[1]、晶体结构 和结晶度[2]、粒子形貌和尺度[3]、微结构[4]、能带结构[5]等等[11 Suntivich, J., K.J. May, H.A. Kim, and Y.Shao-Horn, Visible Light Photo-Oxidation in Au Nanoparticle Sensitized SrTiO3:Nb Photoanode, Journal of Physical Chemistry C 117 (30) 15532-15539 August 2013如果看了上面的文献,你们可能会说这也太化学了吧!但材料系确实冇不 少老师的研究就是这样的,以上文献都是MIT材料系Prof. Yang Shao-Horn的工 作,I佃且是冇代表性的工作。

英实不只是实验,材料系也有做理论与计算的,如 MIT 的 Prof. GerbrandCeder> Prof. Jeffrey GrossmanProf. Ju Li,搞理论与计算 化学的同学也可以关注一下由于我Computational Materials Science方面不太懂, 不敢评论更多总之,材料的设计、合成、应用都几乎无可避免地会用到化学我不是说 所有课题组的同学都适合中材料,但至少像刘忠范老师组、黄富强老师组和其他 一些物化、无机组是挺合适的考虑到申材料还会有很多其他非化学专业的人竞 争,从保险的角度,个人不建议只申材料,而应该化学、材料兼申材料系招的 人里汇集了木科学不同专业的人,这种学科的交叉也是我觉得材料很有意思的地 方最后提一点,材料(MSE)的全称是 Materials Science and Engineering, 但究竟怎么个Engineering?下面这篇Stanford材料系Prof. Yi Cui的文章⑹就工 程味比较浓:[6] Yang, Y., G. Cui, A membrane・free lithium/polysulfide semiJiquid battery for large-scale energy storage, Energy & Environmental Science 6 1552-1558 March 2013这里lithium、polysulfide都不是什么新物质,也不是什么纳米材料,它们 之间的氧化还原反应也不算什么新化学,但作者把这些习以为常的物质组合、组 装成battery,有望用于电网级储能,窃以为这就是Materials Engineering,而前 面 Prof. Yang Shao-Horn 的工作就偏 Materials Science —点。

三、套磁首先,建议早早把CV写好,这样套磁(特别是模板套)的时候可以把CV附上,但不建议用附件的形式,因为老师述要再打开或下载,比较麻烦,我 一般采用以下的格式:Best,(CV)模板套可以从以下网页汲取营养: http://thepn) l/07/25/how・t o・ write・an・email-to ・a・potential-ph-d-adv isor/模板套虽然方便,但内涵明显不足,所以如果能学术套述是尽可能学术套, 最容易的是结合自己组的工作说,例如:In my research group (Prof. Fuqiang Huang), we are currently focusing on enhancing the visible light absorption and electrical conductivity of titania by partial reduction and/or doping for energy applications, such as supercapacitors and solar water splitting cells. Do you consider improving electrical conductivity as a mean to further optimize your oxide electrocatalysts?如杲教授有些研究还没发文章,没有课题组网页或网页上没说,也不妨问 问,例如:Could you tell me more about your ongoing project of electrosynthesis? What kind of reactions are you working on?述可以指出对方文章可能存在的问题,但要谦虚冇礼貌,例如:I have read your paper, "Controlled Chemical Doping of Semiconductor Nanocrystals Using Redox Buffers^ and got a question on the Ohmic definition of the channel conductivity, (sigma) = nhe(mu). I carefully reviewed my physics textbook, and found that this formula is based on a continuous model, without considering the grain-boundary resistance. However, grain boundaries exist in the PbSenanocrystals thin films, so is it appropriate to apply this formula? Maybe I am wrong, I am eager to discuss with you and learn from you.若精心写了一封特别学术的信,但对方理都不理也是很正常的,千万不要 伤心、失望、影响心情。

因为经过学术套,你其实已经学到了很多东西,即便教 授没回复,这已经是你的收获!值得注意的是,个别老师不喜欢套磁,如Stanford材料系的Prof. Mike McGehee,他在他的课题组网页中说:"Unfortunately since hundreds of students contact each professor every year, most professors do not have time to read through the emails. The emails will have no impact on whether or not you get admitted. The best way to get into Stanford is to simply to build up the best set of credentials you can and carefully fill out the application. Most professors do not think about who should be admitted until all of the files are in and the admissions committee is getting ready to meet;像这种老师如不是迫不得已,还是别联系了。
