Gaining access to the Internet and chatting in the synchronous chat-rooms attract more and more people both at home and abroad. With the popularity of the Internet and this new way online communication, net-speak has gradually taken its shape in the cyber space. Young as it is, net-speak does take on a distinctive and prominent look. Therefore, it is of great necessity and importance to make a systematic analysis of this brand-new linguistic phenomenon. However, the researches made by the academia up to now are far from being satisfactory. Net-speak is still a new topic, especially the idea that how the net-speak comes into being, how it evolves and spreads. The number of people who have touched upon this topic is still quite small. This study aims to explore the stylistic features of net-speak on Internet chat-rooms. Previous studies are not able to account for net-speak in an all-round way. Few researches have been conducted on the English and Chinese net-speak from the perspective of stylistics. Therefore in the light of modem theories of stylistics and relative theories in phonology, lexicology, syntax, and conversation analysis, this study attempts to explore this new and challenging field of both English and Chinese net-speak on Internet. The basic methodology adopted in this thesis involves both qualitative and quantitative study. There are two main resources in the collection of samples and materials, namely, offline resources and online resources. Offline resources refer to those net-speak-related books and dictionaries. Online resources are 华侨大学英语语言文学专业硕士学位论文 On the Stylistic Features of Net-Speak IV a group of randomly selected sessions of chatting dialogues from different Internet chat-rooms under different topics on various websites. The present study is conducted on the phonological, graphological, lexical and syntactical levels. The research findings so far with regard to net-speak have demonstrated that there are many stylistically significant features with respect to phonology, graphology, lexicon and discourse, which can be summarized as follows: (1) Phonological features. Onomatopoeias are used to achieve the auditory effects of writing; abundant original homophones are created in order to save time and speed up the online communication; sound repetitions are used in Chinese net-speak to mimic infant language and thus the effect of being cute, intimate and humorous can be obtained. (2) Graphological features. Misspellings and deviant spellings are frequently found on Internet; the reduced use of capitalization is also a marked stylistic feature in English net-speak; punctuations are usually omitted and unconventionally used emoticons are created for the compensation of the clues in the communication. (3) Lexical features. A large number of neologisms occur on internet, which reveals the uniqueness and originality of the net-speak. In most cases, these words still follow the traditional word-formation rules, either in English or Chinese; Old words with new meanings added help to expand the range of chat-room vocabulary and besides, colloquial items, slangy expressions and taboos are also very much used in net-speak. (4) Syntactic features. Short and simple entries are preferred in internet; elliptical and incomplete sentences are used to sustain an informal tone as well as to save keystrokes; interrogative sentences are also frequently used to keep the conversation going. 华侨大学英语语言文学专业硕士学位论文 On the Styl。
