The basic word stock It is the foundation of the vocabulary and forms the common core of the language. Though it constitutes a small percentage of the English vocabulary,it is the most important part of it.英语词汇学Most words of this stock have five characteristics: a. All national character b. Stability c. Productivity d. Polysemy e. Collocability英语词汇学Of course, not all the words of the basic word stock have these characteristics.Pronouns and numerals enjoy nation-wide use and stability;but are semantically monosemous and have limited productivity and collocability. Therefore,“all national character”is the most important of allfeatures that may differentiate words of common use from all others.英语词汇学B. Non-basic vocabularya. terminology b. jargon :bottle linec. slang Certain words are labeled“slang”not because of their appearance or pronunciation but because of their usage. Much of slang is created by changing or extending the meaning of existing words though some slang words are new coinages altogether.英语词汇学d. Argot :can-openere. Dialectal wordsf. Archaisms:thou, whereing. Neologisms:microelectronics, futurology, data bank2.By notion, words can be grouped intoA. Content words(notional, full words)Content words include nouns, verbs, adjectives , adverbs and numerals. They constitute the main body of the English vocabulary and the number is growing.英语词汇学B. Functional words(empty words/form words)Functional words include prepositions, conjunctions, auxiliaries and articles. They make up a very small number of the vocabulary, remain stable. However, they do far more work of expression on average than content words.英语词汇学3. By usage, words can be grouped into:popular words and learned words4.By character, words may fall into:abstract words and concrete words 5.Bymotivation(logicalexplanation),transparent(motiv ated) words(echo, compound, miniskirt)and opaque(non- motivated)words(egghead, eggplant, pineapple, pinen ut,midwives, evil, news, black market)6.By meaning, words may fall into:polysemic words and monosemic words英语词汇学7.By morphology, words may fall into:simple words, compounds and derived words 8.By origin, words can be classified into A. Native wordsNative words are words brought to Britain in the fifth century by the German tribes: the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes, thus known as Anglo-Saxon words. 英语词汇学They are small in number but they form the mainstream of the basic word stock and stand at the core of the language. Therefore, native words have the same characteristics as those of the basic word stock. Apart from these, in contrast to borrowed words ,native words have two other features.英语词汇学a.Neutral in styleStylistically, native words are neither formal nor informal whereas the words borrowed from French or Latin are literary and learned, thus appropriate in formal style. b. Frequent in useNative words are most frequently used in everyday speech and writing.英语词汇学B. Borro。
