Itisacknowledgedthatwhendoingtranslationonecannottranslatewordforword,orsentencebysentence.Therefore,wemustusesometranslationstrategiessuchasamplification,ellipsis,conversionandsoon.Ellipsisasoneofthebasictranslationmethodsplaysanessenti
3、alroleinEnglish-Chineserendition.Translatorsapplyitinordertomaketheirversionsmorecoherentandunderstandable. AccordingtotheOxfordAdvancedLearnersEnglish-ChineseDictionary,ellipsismeansleavingoutawordorwordsfromasentencedeliberately,whenthemeaningcanbeunderstoodwithoutthem.Ellipsisintranslationdoesnot
4、meancuttingsomecontentfromtheoriginalarticles.Whatcouldbeomittedarewordsthatareuselessintranslatedworksorelsetheywillmaketheversionsndantordisobeythemannerofexpressioninanotherlanguage. SomewordsandphrasesareuselessinChinesebutnecessaryinEnglish.ArticlesinEnglisharethemostsignificantphenomenonfromth
5、isaspect.TheyareveryimportantinEnglish,butwecanhardlyseeanyreflectionofthispartinChinese.Ellipsisisdesignedonthebasisoffaithfulnesstotheoriginaltext,makingitmorefluent,smooth,concise,thusconformingtoidiomaticChinese.ThepaperwillexploreellipsisinEnglish-Chinesetranslationfromfiveaspects,whichareellip
6、sesofpronouns,conjunctions,articles,prepositions,modifications,soastoachievesmootherandclearermunicationsamongChinaandEnglish-speakingcountries. II.LiteratureReview Longbefore,somepeoplebegantolearnothercountrieslanguagestounderstandotherscultures.InChina,Xuanzangwasthefirsttranslatorwhonotonlytrans
7、latedtheSanskritsutrasintoChinese,butintroducedthefirstChinesewritingstoforeigncountries,makingforeignersunderstandChinasancientculture.Meanwhile,hewasthefirsttotranslateLaoTsesworksintoSanskrit.IndianscholarshadahighopinionofXuanzang,InChina,thereisnosuchgreattranslator,andalsointhehumanculturalhis
8、tory,wecanonlysaythatXuanzangisthefirstgreattranslator.(YeLang,20XX)WecansaythatitwasXuanzangwhomotivatedpeopletoknowthedifferentpartsoftheworld,theirculturesandthepeopleswholivethere.Then,somebigcountriessuchasAmerica,China,andsoonbecameameltingpot.(GuZhengkun,2000)Peoplehaveimperceptiblyspentthous
9、andsofyearsinknowingeachother. WithChinasentryintoWTOanditsopen-uppolicy,cross-culturalexchangesareincreasinglyfrequentbetweenthiscountryandothers.AlotofforeigntouristsetovisitChina.Whiletraveling,theseforeignersarenotsatisfiedwiththetranslationsofthescenicspots.Sometimes,theyevenfeelconfused.Alotof
10、problemsexistinthetranslation,suchasmisuseofwords,poorexpressionofmeaningandsoon.Allofthesepoortranslationsdoharmtoourcountrysinternationalimage,andcausealotofinconveniencesfortheforeignvisitors.(MaZuyi,2000).Iamfondoftourismandbeingafreetouristliketheotherswhoaregoodatenjoyingtheirwonderfullives.Th
11、eloveoftourismmakesmefeeltheneedtoimprovethetranslation.ButeverytimewhenIhaveatrip,manyunsuitabletranslationsofthenamesofthosescenicspotswillembarrassme.Tourismispartofinterculturalmunication,sopropertranslationofthescenicspotsbeemoreandmoreimportanttoourcountry. Communicationplaysasignificantrolein
12、theglobalizedsociety.Inordertoknoweachotherbetter,peoplefromallovertheworldhavetriedaverityofways.Ofcourse,translationisoneofthem.Alltranslatorshavedoheirbesttomakethetranslatedworksmoreconsistentwiththeneedsofpeople.(GuJinming,1997)Frommyperspective,theyreallyhavedoneagreatjob.AndIwanttoretrospectt
13、hecauseoftheirdevelopment.Afterathoroughevaluation,IchooseabranchoftranslationellipsisintranslationfromEnglishtoChinese,thenIdidthefollowingjobs. Iputallmyresearchesandotherstuffstogether,andthenIfoundthatitisamoncaseinEnglishandChinesewhichdrawsmuchacademicinterest.In1976,HallidayandHsanclassifiede
14、llipsisintonominal,verbalandclausalellipsis.Thisclassificationexertsgreatinfluenceinacademiccircle.Thereafter,ellipsisinChineseandEnglishhasbeenstudiedaccordingtothistheory,whichisbasedondifferentlayersofstructure.ThiskindofstudyunderlinesdifferentiationsandsimilaritiesofellipsisinChineseandEnglish.
