1、Module 4 MusicLiu Fang is recognised as one of the most successful pipa players as well as a sensitive performer on the guzheng. She has cooperated with worldclass musicians all around the world and has released several albums. The following article is written by her about how she thinks of performa

2、nces and her understanding of music.While music is often about expressing mood and feeling, it is fascinating to experience how musicians who play different instruments come together to create a great piece of music. It is inspiring and creative, particularly when organisers provide enough time for

3、musicians to rehearse (排练) before concerts. We have a lot to discuss and always bring our work to another level. This is especially true when musicians meet with an open heart, willing to learn from each other and not simply satisfied with things just sounding “okay”For my concerts, I play mostly tr

4、aditional Chinese music. This type of music is often closely linked to poetry. As poetry, it sets out to express human feelings and purify (净化) the mind. This type of music was noncommercial, typically played solo on private occasions for oneself, or for Zhi Yin close friends and music lovers. The m

5、usic is supposed to be played in a calm state, and the feeling and energy are present and should remain fresh even when performers are repeating the “same old pieces”The challenge here is the current trend of looking for “new”. In fact, the “old” music has great value. While there is nothing wrong w

6、ith creating new and indeed, todays good creation will be tomorrows tradition it is misleading to use this to judge musicmaking. Even for the same piece, every performance is “original and new”, not to mention the different environments and audiences. In a real sense, one cant separate music from mu

7、sician. When the musician dies, his or her music no longer exists. Recording is not the real thing. 9、 studied the guzheng in 1993.What is your musical training and background?My mother is a Dianju actress. Dianju is a kind of Chinese opera, which includes singing, dancing and acting. When I was a child, she took me to performances. I listened to music before I could speak! When I was five years old

10、, she taught me to play the yueqin.In 1990, when I was 15 years old, I went to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where I studied the pipa and the guzheng. After I graduated, I went back to my hometown of Kunming and worked as a pipa soloist of the Kunming Music and Dance Troupe. In 1996, I moved t
