These are the colors and designs of the American flag. No one is sure how the name Uncle Sam started. The first time the name appeared
13、 in print was in 1813. It became popular and was soon used in other places. In 1830 a picture of Uncle Sam was used in a cartoon. You can still find him in cartoons today. The United States Army has used Uncle Sam on many of its posters. The most famous poster shows Uncle Sam pointing his finger. He
14、 is saying, “I want you.” This poster first appeared in 1917. America was fighting in World War I. The poster encouraged people to join the Army. The most popular story of how Uncle Sam began is based on a story about a man named Samuel Wilson. Sam Wilson lived in Troy, New York, in the early 1800s.
15、 He was a pleasant man who had many friends. People sometimes called him Uncle Sam. In 1812 the United States was at war with Great Britain. During the war Sam Wilson checked (检查) barrels (桶) of salted meat for the soldiers at a nearby camp. These barrels had the letters U.S. stamped on them. The le
16、tters stood for United States. The soldiers from around Troy knew Sam Wilson. When he checked the meat, they made jokes. They said it was “Uncle Sams meat.” Other soldiers who did not know Sam Wilson got mixed up. They thought the U.S. on the barrels stood for Uncle Sam. And that may be how the name got started. 21.
