TheMayFourthSquareisbackedbytheCityHallbuilding,southtoFushanBay,700meterslongfromnorthtosouth,withatotalareaof10hectares.Itisamodernstylesquarefulloflawns,fountainsandsculptures. 1919QingdaoraisedtheissueofsovereigntyMayFourthmovement.In1914,Japanreplacedthe
2、German,andthenproposedTheTwenty-oneattemptingtotakelong-termoccupationofQingdao,whichcausedstrongoppositionsfrompeopleacrossthecountry.InJanuary,1919,attheParisPeace,whenChinaattendedasvictorsandclaimedthesovereignofQingdao,theywererejectedbyWesternpowers,andQingdaowasforciblytransferredtoJapan.Then
3、ewscameout,thestudentsinBeijingburstoutprotestinginMay4th.ThegovernmentwasforcedrefusesigningatParisPeace,whichsmashingJapaneseconspiracyofpermanentoccupation.In1922,thesovereigntyofQingdaowasrecovered.AcrossthesquareistheCityHall,atallandmajesticbuilding,facingsouth,simpleandneat,seriousandsolemn.T
4、hesouthissquare-mesh-shaped,meaningtherigorousstyleforthegovernment.IthasbeealandmarkbuildingofQingdao.Drylandlatticefountainisanundergroundfountain,hiding8rows9columns,atotalof72dots,whichcanjetindifferentshapesandheights.Rightinthecenterofthesquar,theredtorch-shapedsculptureMayFourthWindistheheavi
5、eststeelsculptureinthecountry.Itweighs700tons,andisabout30metershigh,27metersindiameter.Asahighwindarousingfromland,thissculpturepromotestheMayFourthpatriotismspiritandencouragespeopletoworkhard.Atthesouthseaofthesculptureisthefirstoffshore100-meterfountaininChina.Adoptingadvancedhigh-pressurepumps,
6、spewingwaterisupto100meters.Becausethewaterisextracteddirectlyfromthesea,avoidingthecorrosionandsalinizationofshorefacilitiesandlawnfountain,itisdesignedatthe160metersawayoffshore.WesttothesquareistheMusicSquare.ThecenterlandscapetheSailofMusic,isawhitetaperedsoftwaresculpturetent,drawnbyimportedmem
7、branestructure,dividedintotwopieces,about5metershigh,fixedby15anchordots.ThehugepianounderthetentismonlyknownasThePianoKing.Itmustbeplayedbytwopeopleatthesametime.Everyfestival,thesoundofmusicwillhaunteverywhere. TheFushanBayinthefront,istheplacewhereheldtheOlympic.ruiwen.petition.Becauseoftheexcept

10、e5halls,1pavilion,1altar,and3ancestraltemples.Itisdividedinto9courtyards.Altogetherthereare466rooms,54gatewaysandover1000stonetabletsandsteles.Itcoversanareaof21.8hectares(equalsto327.5mu)andisover1kilometerslongfromnorthtosouth.Itismagnificentandresplendentandirrespectiveoftheanglefromwhichyouenjoy
11、viewingthetemple.ItismensuratewithinfluenceandfameofConfucius.Assuch,itisveryrareworldhistoricaltreasure. TheConfuciusTemplesfirstgatewayiscalledGoldenSoundandJadeVibrationGateway(金声玉振门),“GoldenSound”and“JadeVibration”symbolizethewholeprocessofplayingmusicin ancienttime.Themusicstartswiththebeatingo
12、fadrumandendswiththestrikingofaninvertedbell(磬).ThismeansthatConfuciussthoughtsareaprehensiveexpressionssaintsideas. NowweetotheLingStarGate.ThisgatewaserectedinMingDynastyandwasrebuiltin1754.ThethreecharacterswerewrittenbyEmperorQianlong.Thelegendhasitthatthereare28constellationsinthegalaxy.Thestar
13、inchargeofcultureiscalled“LingStar”or“WenquStar”.PeoplebelieveConfuciusistheLingStar.SotheyshowrespecttoConfuciusisasimportantastoshowrespecttoHeaven. Lookatthisstonesteleonthetemplegateseasternwall.Itiswrittenonthestelethat“officialsshoulddismounthere.”Inthepast,thecivilandmilitaryofficialsandpeopl
14、einthestreetwererequiredtogetofffromtheirhorsesorsedanchairsandwalkonfootwhentheypassedbytheTempletoshowtheirreverenceforConfuciusandhistemple. WearenowenteringtheDachengGate(大成门).TheTempleofConfuciusisdividedintothreelayoutsfromhere.ThemiddlegateistheDachengGate;thetwobesidetheDachengGatearetheGold
15、enSoundGateontheleftandJadeVibrationGateontheright.TheoneonfartherwesternsideistheQishengGate(启圣门)andtheoneon farthereasternsideistheChengshengGate(承圣门). ThisisthemainhalloftheTempleofConfucius.DachengHall,togetherwiththeForbiddenCitysHallofSupremeHarmonyandDaimiaoTemplesTiankuangHall(天贶殿)inTaiancit
16、y(泰安)arecalledthethreegreatesthallsinChinaor“theThreeGreatestHallsintheEast”.Thishallis24.8metershigh,45.78meterswideand24.8metersdeep.Itissurroundedby28dragoncolumnscarvedoutofwholeblocksofstone.The10columnsinfrontaredeepreliefsculpturesandtheothersareshallowones.Theyaremadewithexquisitetechniqueandaretreasuresofthewholeworld.Carvedoneachcolumnaretwodragonstwistingandfly
