3、tobeanotherstudent.Ichosetomimicabeautifulpetitegirlwithlongdarkhair.Shewasmypolaropposite,thisformercheerleader-turned-hippie-princessnamedMichelle.Shegotakickoutofmyimpressionofher.Ithoughtitwascoolthatshecouldlaughatherself.Webeganafriendshipthathasbroughtustothepresentday. Yetwewerealwaysopposit
4、es.IamRomanCatholic,sheisJewish.Iamtall,sheisshort.Onerainyafternoononcampus,Michelleinsistedoncarryingtheumbrellaforbothofus,(IdontthinkIstoodupstraightuntilthenextday!) Backthen,shewasaspassionateaDemocratasIwasaRepublican.However,myfriendandIstillhadsomethinginmonthatwasmoreimportantthanallthedif

6、stensionsincreasedduetotheKerry-Edwardsdemagoguery.ThisisthefirsttimeinmemorythatIveevenbeenappalledbybothspousesoftheDemocraticticket.IratherlikedTipperGoreandHadassaLieberman.Ithoughttheyweresweet.AndthatsthewayIusedtofeelaboutmyliberalpals.But,nowaTeresaHeinz-Kerry-likeirrationality/ElizabethEdwa

8、lityofthoseIknowwhoarevotingfortheDemocraticPartyticket.LikeKerry,theystillseemtoconsidertheUnitedStateslife-and-deathstruggleanuisance.Theseliberalfriendsofminearecertainlynotbadpeople,butdeepdown,theystilldontgetthatweareatwarwithagreaterevilthananyofushaseverknown.Combinedwiththeextremismcultural

Thesoberingfactisthatthesefriendshipsarejusttootaxing(inbothsensesofthatword).Thoserelationshipshavebeelikeoldpromdressesinthattheyjustdontfitanymore.Thereesapointwheresomeassociationscanbeeafirehazardinonescloset.Itmaybetimetodospringclean

Sure,friendscantagreeoneverything,noraretheysupposedtobutthoughImaythinksomeonesaniceperson,fun,etc.,increasinglydeepdifferencesinourworldviewcantbeignoredinthesefrighteningtimes. Threedecadeslater,Michelleisnolongertheshorter-than-meactresswhoinsistedoncarryingtheumbrel

13、t(althoughsaidliberalwouldntwarmourhearts).TheresGeniethestockbroker,Cathythecastingdirector,Robinthemomofoneofmyformeractingstudents,Sallythedaughterofoneofmymothersoldfriendsandmanyothers.Theire-mailmessagesandcallsletmeknowthatthoughotherfriendshipsmaywitherduringthiselection,Imhardlyalone.Theyal
14、lhaveapointofviewthatenablesustoskiptoshorthand.(DidyoureadDrudge?Yep!)Allofthesewomenmakeupmyownpersonalnon-elitistversionofTheView,TheConservativeCut. Yes,nowthoseoldchildrenslyricsresonatewithanewmeaninginMakenewfriends,butkeeptheold,oneissilverandtheotherisgold.Regretfully,withoutsharedvalueseve
15、nafterthistumultuouselectionof20XX,somefriendshipsmayhaveturnedtoatinthatringshollowintheseperiloustimes. Bytheway,IrecentlychattedwithoneofthoseformerBrownieswhosangwithmesolongago,Sheisasecuritymom.SheisvotingforGeorgeW.BushandshewilldefinitelybeincludedonmyChristmascardlist. Everyoneofus,richorpo
16、or,shouldatleasthaveoneortwogoodfriends.MyfriendswilllistentomewhenIwanttospeak,willwipemyeyeswhenIcry,willtakecareofmewhenIamsick,andmyfriendswillgotogetherwithmesidebysidethroughthisjourneyoflife.
