2、gotstudentstuninginfromallacrossAmerica,fromkindergartenthrough12thgrade.AndIamjustsogladthatallcouldjoinustoday.AndIwanttothankWakefieldforbeingsuchanoutstandinghost.Giveyourselvesabigroundofapplause.(Applause.) Iknowthatformanyofyou,todayisthefirstdayofschool.Andforthoseofyouinkindergarten,orstart
3、ingmiddleorhighschool,itsyourfirstdayinanewschool,soitsunderstandableifyourealittlenervous.Iimaginetherearesomeseniorsouttherewhoarefeelingprettygoodrightnow-(applause)-withjustonemoreyeartogo.Andnomatterwhatgradeyourein,someofyouareprobablywishingitwerestillsummerandyoucouldvestayedinbedjustalittle
4、bitlongerthismorning. Iknowthatfeeling.WhenIwasyoung,myfamilylivedoverseas.IlivedinIndonesiaforafewyears.Andmymother,shedidnthavethemoneytosendmewherealltheAmericankidswenttoschool,butshethoughtitwasimportantformetokeepupwithanAmericaneducation.Soshedecidedtoteachmeextralessonsherself,MondaythroughF
5、riday.Butbecauseshehadtogotowork,theonlytimeshecoulddoitwasat4:30inthemorning. Now,asyoumightimagine,Iwasnttoohappyaboutgettingupthatearly.Andalotoftimes,Idfallasleeprightthereatthekitchentable.ButwheneverIdplain,mymotherwouldjustgivemeoneofthoselooksandshedsay,Thisisnopicnicformeeither,buster.(Laug

SoIknowthatsomeofyouarestilladjustingtobeingbackatschool.ButImheretodaybecauseIhavesomethingimportanttodiscusswithyou.ImherebecauseIwanttotalkwithyouaboutyoureducationandwhatsexpectedofallofyouinthisnewschoolyear. Now,Ivegivenalotofspeechesabouteducation.AndIvetalkedaboutresponsibilityalot. I
7、vetalkedaboutteachersresponsibilityforinspiringstudentsandpushingyoutolearn. Ivetalkedaboutyourparentsresponsibilityformakingsureyoustayontrack,andyougetyourhomeworkdone,anddontspendeverywakinghourinfrontoftheTVorwiththeXbox. Ivetalkedalotaboutyourgovernmentsresponsibilityforsettinghighstandards,and
8、supportingteachersandprincipals,andturningaroundschoolsthatarentworking,wherestudentsarentgettingtheopportunitiesthattheydeserve. Butattheendoftheday,wecanhavethemostdedicatedteachers,themostsupportiveparents,thebestschoolsintheworld-andnoneofitwillmakeadifference,noneofitwillmatterunlessallofyouful
9、fillyourresponsibilities,unlessyoushowuptothoseschools,unlessyoupayattentiontothoseteachers,unlessyoulistentoyourparentsandgrandparentsandotheradultsandputinthehardworkittakestosucceed.ThatswhatIwanttofocusontoday:theresponsibilityeachofyouhasforyoureducation. Iwanttostartwiththeresponsibilityyouhav
10、etoyourself.Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingthatyouregoodat.Everysingleoneofyouhassomethingtooffer.Andyouhavearesponsibilitytoyourselftodiscoverwhatthatis.Thatstheopportunityaneducationcanprovide. Maybeyoucouldbeagreatwriter-maybeevengoodenoughtowriteabookorarticlesinanewspaper-butyoumightnotknowitun
11、tilyouwritethatEnglishpaper-thatEnglishclasspaperthatsassignedtoyou.Maybeyoucouldbeaninnovatororaninventor-maybeevengoodenoughtoeupwiththenextiPhoneorthenewmedicineorvaccine-butyoumightnotknowituntilyoudoyourprojectforyourscienceclass.MaybeyoucouldbeamayororasenatororaSupremeCourtjustice-butyoumight
12、notknowthatuntilyoujoinstudentgovernmentorthedebateteam. Andnomatterwhatyouwanttodowithyourlife,Iguaranteethatyoullneedaneducationtodoit.Youwanttobeadoctor,orateacher,orapoliceofficer?Youwanttobeanurseoranarchitect,alawyeroramemberofourmilitary?Youregoingtoneedagoodeducationforeverysingleoneofthosec
13、areers.Youcannotdropoutofschoolandjustdropintoagoodjob.Youvegottotrainforitandworkforitandlearnforit. Andthisisntjustimportantforyourownlifeandyourownfuture.Whatyoumakeofyoureducationwilldecidenothinglessthanthefutureofthiscountry.ThefutureofAmericadependsonyou.Whatyourelearninginschooltodaywilldeterminewhetherweasanationcanmeetourgreatestchallengesinthefuture.
