2、udentwhosefathertoldafriendofminethathissonseducationhadbeenarealvalue.ItstoppedhismotherfrombraggingabouthimVerdanaIhaveetodayfromtheturmoilofyourcapitaltothetranquilityofyourcampustospeakaboutthefutureofyourcountry.ThepurposeofprotectingthelifeofourNationandpreservingthelibertyofourcitizensistopur
3、suethehappinessofourpeople.OursuccessinthatpursuitisthetestofoursuccessasaNation.VerdanaYourimaginationandyourinitiativeandyourindignationwilldeterminewhetherwebuildasocietywhereprogressistheservantofourneeds,orasocietywhereoldvaluesandnewvisionsareburiedunderunbridledgrowth.Forinyourtimewehavetheop
4、portunitytomovenotonlytowardtherichsocietyandthepowerfulsociety,butupwardtotheGreatSociety.VerdanaTheGreatSocietyisaplacewhereeverychildcanfindknowledgetoenrichhismindandtoenlargehistalents.Itisaplacewhereleisureisawelechancetobuildandreflect,notafearedcauseofboredomandrestlessness.Itisaplacewhereth
5、ecityofmanservesnotonlytheneedsofthebodyandthedemandsofmercebutthedesireforbeautyandthehungerformunity.Itisaplacewheremancanrenewcontactwithnature.Itisaplacewhichhonorscreationforitsownsakeandforwhatisaddstotheunderstandingoftherace.Itisaplacewheremenaremoreconcernedwiththequalityoftheirgoalsthanthe
6、quantityoftheirgoods.VerdanaSoIwanttotalktoyoutodayaboutthreeplaceswherewebegintobuildtheGreatSociety-inourcities,inourcountryside,andinourclassrooms.VerdanaAndoursocietywillneverbegreatuntilourcitiesaregreat.Todaythefrontierofimaginationandinnovationisinsidethosecitiesandnotbeyondtheirborders.Newex
7、perimentsarealreadygoingon.ItwillbethetaskofyourgenerationtomaketheAmericancityaplacewherefuturegenerationswille,notonlytolive,buttolivethegoodlife.AndIunderstandthatifIstayedheretonightIwouldseethatstudentsarereallydoingtheirbesttolivethegoodlife.VerdanaItisinspiringtoseehowallofyou,whileyouareinth
8、iscountry,aretryingsohardtoliveatthelevelofthepeople.thestrongandthefree,butthebeautiful.Todaythatbeautyisindanger.Thewaterwedrink,thefoodweeat,theveryairthatwebreathe,arethreatenedwithpollution.Ourparksareovercrowded,ourseashoresoverburdened.Greenfieldsanddenseforestsaredisappearing.Foroncethebattl
9、eislost,onceournaturalsplendorisdestroyed,itcanneverberecaptured.Andoncemancannolongerwalkwithbeautyorwonderatnaturehisspiritwillwitherandhissustenancebewasted.Thereyourchildrensliveswillbeshaped.Oursocietywillnotbegreatuntileveryyoungmindissetfreetoscanthefarthestreachesofthoughtandimagination.Wear
10、estillfarfromthatgoal.Today,8millionadultAmericans,morethantheentirepopulationof,havenotfinished5yearsofschool.Nearly20millionhavenotfinished8yearsofschool.Nearly54million-morethanonequarterofallhavenotevenfinishedhighschool.Eachyearmorethan100,000highschoolgraduates,withprovedability,donotentercoll
11、egebecausetheycannotaffordit.Andifwecannoteducatetodaysyouth,whatwillwedoin1970whenelementaryschoolenrollmentwillbe5milliongreaterthan1960?Andhighschoolenrollmentwillriseby5million.Andcollegeenrollmentwillincreasebymorethan3million.Butmoreclassroomsandmoreteachersarenotenough.Wemustseekaneducational
12、systemwhichgrowsinexcellenceasitgrowsinsize.Thismeansbettertrainingforourteachers.Itmeanspreparingyouthtoenjoytheirhoursofleisureaswellastheirhoursoflabor.Itmeansexploringnewtechniquesofteaching,tofindnewwaystostimulatetheloveoflearningandthecapacityforcreation.Iintendtoestablishworkinggroupstoprepa
13、reaseriesofWhiteHouseconferencesandmeetings-onthecities,onnaturalbeauty,onthequalityofeducation,andonotheremergingchallenges.AndfromthesemeetingsandfromthisinspirationandfromthesestudieswewillbegintosetourcoursetowardtheGreatSociety.norcanitrelysolelyonthestrainedresourcesoflocalauthority.Theyrequir
14、eustocreatenewconceptsofcooperation,acreativefederalism,betweentheNationalCapitalandtheleadersoflocalmunities.Withinyourlifetimepowerfulforces,alreadyloosed,willtakeustowardawayoflifebeyondtherealmofourexperience,almostbeyondtheboundsofourimagination.towardanewage.Youhavethechanceneverbeforeafforded
15、toanypeopleinanyage.Youcanhelpbuildasocietywherethedemandsofmorality,andtheneedsofthespirit,canberealizedinthelifeoftheNation.willyoujoininthebattletogiveeverycitizenthefullequalitywhichGodenjoinsandthelawrequires,whateverhisbelief,orrace,orthecolorofhisskin?WillyoujoininthebattletobuildtheGreatSoci
16、ety,toprovethatourmaterialprogressisonlythefoundationonwhichwewillbuildaricherlifeofmindandspirit?Thosewhocametothislandsoughttobuildmorethanjustanewcountry.Theysoughtanewworld.SoIhaveeheretodaytoyourcampustosaythatyoucanmaketheirvisionourreality.Soletusfromthismomentbeginourworksothatinthefuturemenwilllookbackandsay:Itwasthen,afteralongandwearyway,thatmanturnedtheexploitsofhisgeniustothefullenrichmentofhislife.
