8、failuremightmeanlossofproperty,banishmentordeath,politicians, playingforhigherstakes,playedmorefiercelyandunscrupulouslythaninmoderndays,andtherewasnocontrollingforceofpublicopiniontokeepthemwithintheboundsofcommonhonesty.HencetheageofQueenAnneispreeminentlyanageofintrigue.Thegovernmentwasalmostasun

9、settledasintheearlydaysofpersonalmonarchy,andtherewasthisdifference- thatitwaspolicyratherthanforceuponwhichmendependedforkeepingtheirposition.Secondly,menofletterswereadmittedtotheinnercirclesofintrigueastheyhadneverbeenbeforeandastheyhaveneverbeensince.AgenerationlaterWalpoledefiedthem,andpaidther

10、ougherinstrumentsthatheconsideredsufficientforhispurposeinsolidcoinoftherealm;butQueenAnnesstatesmen,whetherfromdifferenceoftastesordifferenceofpolicy,paidtheirprincipalliterarychampionswithsocialprivilegesandhonorablepublicappointments.Hencemenoflettersweredirectlyinfectedbythelowpoliticalmoralityo

12、crupleswherethiswasconcerned.Hisvanityandhischildishloveofintrigueareseenattheirworstinhispettymanoeuvrestosecurethepublicationofhislettersduringhislifetime.TheseintricateproceedingswereuavelledwithgreatpatienceandingenuitybyCharlesWentworthDuke,whenthefalsepictureofhisrelationswithhiscontemporaries

13、whichPopehadimposedonthepublichadbeenpracticallyacceptedforacentury.ElizabethThomas,themistressofHeyCromwell,hadsoldPopesearlyletterstoHeyCromwelltothebooksellerCurllfortenguineas.ThesewerepublishedinCurllsMiscellaneain1726(dated1727),andhadconsiderablesuccess.Thissurreptitiouspublicationseemstohave

14、suggestedtoPopethe desirabilityofpublishinghisowncorrespondence,whichheimmediatelybegantocollectfromvariousfriendsonthepleaofpreventingasimilarclandestinetransaction.ThepublicationbyWycherleysexecutorsofaposthumousvolumeofthedramatistsproseandversefurnishedPopewithanexcusefortheappearanceofhisowncor

15、respondencewithWycherley,whichwasaccompaniedbyaseriesofunnecessarydeceptions.After manipulatinghiscorrespondencesoastoplacehisowncharacterinthebestlight,hedepositedacopyinthelibraryofEdward,secondearlofOxford,andthenhehaditprinted.ThesheetswereofferedtoCurllbyapersoncallinghimselfP.T.,whoprofessedad

16、esiretoinjurePope,butwasnootherthanPopehimself.ThecopywasdeliveredtoCurllin1735afterlongnegotiationsbyanagentwhocalledhimselfR.Smythe,withafeworiginalstovouchfortheirauthenticity.P.T.haddrawnupan advertisementstatingthatthebookwastocontainanswersfromvariouspeers.CurllwassummonedbeforetheHouseofLordsforbreachofprivilege,butwasacquitted,asthelettersfrompee
