4、sity dormitory for graduate students. Before coming to the US, I assumed that living in a dormitory would be a good way to meet American students and make friends with them. But I have discovered that I actually dont see the other students in my dormitory very much except in the cafeteria. American

5、students and International students dont interact very much. Usually the Americans sit with other Americans and the International students sit with other International students. There is one American student, June, who I have gotten to know a little bit. She is in one of my classes and also lives in

6、 my dormitory. I have seen her several times in the cafeteria and gone over to sit with her. 10、o talk with one of them about something personal. It may also be that she felt an obligation to spend time with old friends. But I would concede that the reason June didnt sit with you may have had something to do with the fact that you are Chinese and she is American. One problem overseas students

11、often experience in the USas well as in Chinais that students who share the same culture and language tend to stick together rather than reaching out to students from other cultures. In part, this is because of language. Its simply easier to communicate with someone who speaks your own language flue

12、ntly because you can talk more quickly and naturally without having to worry that the other person wont understand you. Also students from the same culture generally have more in common and tend to feel more comfortable together. This doesnt necessarily mean that they are not interested in students

13、from other cultures, or that they dont like them. However, interacting with students from other cultures takes more work and effort, so sometimes students stay in their own group just because it is easier.,Lead-in Activities,Just Ask,Davids Response,Another very specific problem is that its sometime

14、s difficult to make conversation with someone from a different culture because you dont know what to talk about. Often when people know very little about somebody elses country or culture, they are reluctant to ask questions because they are afraid of sounding ignorant, or perhaps because they simpl

15、y cant think of any good questions to ask. Finally, you may also have had some Chinese assumptions that made the experience even harder to understand. In China, foreigners are usually treated as very special and Chinese people are often very interested in them, so you may have expected that an Ameri

16、can would have the same response to you.
