1、Martin Luther King, Jr.: I Have a Dreamdelivered 28 August 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C.I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.Five score(sk:, sk20) years ago, a great American, in whos

2、e symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation(i,mnsipein n. 释放,解放) Proclamation(prklmei()n n. 宣言,公布,文告). One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles(mnkl n. 手铐(束缚)vt 上手铐(束

4、缚))of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hu midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity.(prsperiti n. 繁荣,兴旺) ndred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished(lgwi v. 憔悴, (eksail, egz- n. 放逐,流放,被放逐者v. 放逐,流放)

And so weve come here today to dramatize(drmtaiz v. 使戏剧化vt. 把(小说凋萎,苦思)in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile等)改编成戏剧,渲染) a shameful condition.In a sense we have come to our nations capital to cash a check. When the architects (:kitekt)of our republic wrote the

6、magnificent(mgnifisnt a. 壮丽的,宏伟的) words of the Constitution (n. 组织,宪法,体格)and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory(prmisri a. 约定的)note to which every American was to fall heir(n. 继承人. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaran

7、teed the unalienable(,neiljnbl a. 不可剥夺的) rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is obvious today that America has defaulted (dif:lt v. 默认,不履行义务,缺席,拖欠)on this promissory note, insofar(,insuf: ad. 在.范围内) as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligat

8、ion, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked insufficient funds.But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults(v:lt 地下室; 银行的金库) of opportunity of this nation. And so

9、we have come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing(trkwila

10、izvt. 使平静,使镇定)drug of gradualism(n. 渐进主义). Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit(a. 被日光照射了的,阳光照射的) path of racial justice. 11、 racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of Gods children.It would be fatal(a. 致命的,毁灭性的) for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. 12、ntentn.不满) will not pass until there is an invigorating(invigreit v. 鼓舞,激励vt. 增添活力) autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to b

13、usiness as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility(trkwiliti) in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds(hw:lwindn.旋风) of revolt(rivultvt. & vi.(使)厌恶n.造反, 起义) will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.But

14、there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and h

15、atred. We must ever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate(didenreitvi.衰退; 堕落; 退化) into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic(mdestikadj.雄伟的, 威严的壮丽的) heights of meeting physical force with soul force.The marvelous new militancy(militLnsi n. 战斗性(交战状态)) which has engulfed(inlfvt.吞没, 包住) the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with ou
