1、Study Plan1. Introduction of my backgroundMy name is Zhiqin Tan. I will graduate from Harbin institute of technology with a bachelors degree of mechanical engineering next July. Three years undergraduate study has made me realize that I do not just want to play with numbers, but also to use the rule
2、s of numbers to solve problems in the real world. During my study in Fudan University, I rapidly became fascinated with statistics which I view as the best application of mathematics in our real life. Statistics empowers us to predict the future and analyzes problems under uncertainty. Over the past
3、 two years, I had opportunities to participate in several projects as internship, such as the Appraisal of an Elevator Service System for the National Undergraduate Innovational Experimentation Program and the Regional Financial Stability Study for the Peoples Bank of China in Shanghai. I wish I cou
4、ld know more about statistics after this project. These projects have expanded my knowledge, my scope of world, given me precious hands-on experience and shaped my career goals. 2. The reasons why I would like to go to USA to further my graduate studyI would like to pursue my graduate study in Ameri
5、ca. The reasons are quit simple. America is in a leading position in the field of Statistics. It is the place where many important statistical theories and methods originated from. Besides, many statistical softwares such as SAS、S-Plus、Matlab and Eviews are designed by American Universities and rese
6、arch institutes. Thus I gradually realize that I can only receive frontier ideas or advanced knowledge and methodology in my field of study in the USA. I believe that my graduate study in America will provide me with essential and logical ways for me to become more professional.3. The reasons why I
7、choose Columbia UniversityI choose Columbia University is because its a world-renowned University with a long history of 255 years. Its great reputation and great fame have attracted me deeply. The Department of Statistics ranks top 15 in statistics. Its research focus, flexible curriculum and acade
8、mic professors are ideal to help me achieve my career goals. I prefer to solve problems in practical ways and the graduate program can exactly offer me practical courses such as data mining and the application of statistical software. I will be learning five core courses, which are Probability, Stat
9、istical Inference, Advanced Data Analysis, Linear Regression Models and Generalized Linear Models. At the same time, I will take several elective courses. If it is possible, I plan to take Time Series Analysis, Introduction to SAS & S-Plus, Financial Calculus, Introduction to Stochastic Process and
10、Data Mining as my elective courses. 4. What will I do after graduation?I will come back to China after graduation. My desired place is Shanghai which will become an international financial center in the near future. Its an unmissable chance for me. I hope to work for a consultation company first so
11、that I have chance to implement statistical principles and tools that I have learned to solve the real-world problems faced by people in all sorts of fields. In order to continue to help others achieve their financial dreams, I hope to have my own investment company later on. I aim to be a leader in the area of consultation and finance in various fields in china as my career goal.
