1、Unit 4,Text A Unemployment Insurance Eligibility,Text B Making the Most of a Job Fair,Text A: Unemployment Insurance Eligibility,If you lose your job in the U.S., you have a good chance of being entitled to unemployment insurance cheques and other benefits from your state unemployment office. To be

2、eligible for benefits, you must meet your states requirements for wages earned and time worked during a period of timethe base period. In many states, the base period is the first four calendar quarters out of the last five, prior to the time you apply for benefits. In other words, you must have bee

3、n substantially employed during the past 12 months. Even if you didnt work continuously during the period, for the same employer, or in the same state, you still might be eligible. If you didnt earn much, the case is the same. Your unemployment pay will be determined by your wages and a minimum amou

4、nt must have been earned during your base period.,课文,In addition, you must also meet other state eligibility requirements. Generally, losing your job cant be your fault. If you are fired or quit, you may not be eligible but if youre laid off, youre likely to be eligible. If you quit for reasonable c

5、ause, you may still qualify. Some states allow you to quit for personal reasons. You must be available, willing and physically able to work. If you become disabled while unemployed, youre not likely to be eligible for state unemployment benefits but may be eligible for state disability benefits if y

6、ou work in one of the few states that provide them. The state agency that handles unemployment claims also handles disability claims. The Social Security Administration provides disability to individuals who qualify. You must actively seek work. In order to get each benefit check, youll probably hav

7、e to report regularly that you are searching for a job. It might be as simple as filling out a form and mailing it each week but you may be required to keep a record of all the employers you contacted and your state office might check them. If you are starting up a business, you might not have to se

8、ek work. You cant refuse to take a job for which you qualify. For example, you might lose eligibility if you refuse a job simply because you didnt like the place of work. Your state office probably wont force you to take a job if it is below your previous salary or qualifications.,You cant attend sc

9、hool full time. If you can show that you are seeking a job for which you are qualified and can work outside of school hours, this may be acceptable. Your state may offer training as an unemployment benefit in which case, attending school full time will be an exception. If you get a full-time job, yo

10、ur benefits will stop but, in some states, you may work part time and still collect. If you were self-employed on a full-time basis, you probably would not be eligible for unemployment benefits, unless you paid insurance through your state. However, if you were self-employed while also working as an

11、 employee and you lost your job, you may qualify. You may also be eligible if you were an employee and were attempting to become self-employed, because you lost your job. Some unemployment offices have special programs to help unemployed workers become self-employed. You would not be eligible for be

12、nefits from another state if you are already receiving them from one state, but you might be eligible to collect the difference, if one state pays more than the other and youve worked in both states.
