Philosophy will teach you to think critically and to express yourself clearly, providing you with key skills
8、 necessary for succeeding in any job.With eleven full-time members of staff, several part-time members of staff, and about two hundred and eighty students, the department is small enough to sustain a friendly family atmosphere, but also large enough to generate plenty of life and activity of its own
9、. We pride ourselves on the broad content of our philosophy course, which includes most of the serious areas of philosophy in the Western tradition. The course is designed to foster clarity of expression and high standards of critical thought. It is a fundamental belief of our department that the de
10、bate and exchange of philosophical themes and concepts is imperative to the study of philosophy and our every effort is made to sustain the traditional modes of discussion, such as small tutorial groups and seminar groups.You will also have the opportunity to join the University of Southampton Philo
11、sophy Society (Philsoc) is an independent club which aims to provide social and academic opportunities for its members. Philsoc, an incredibly active society, organises events throughout the year including talks from outside speakers, film nights, pub quizzes and by now legendary parties. 1.1. Study
12、ing Philosophy at SouthamptonStudying Philosophy at SouthamptonEffective teaching and learning in Higher Education is a collaborative endeavour: you will gain skills that will allow you to take responsibility for your own education and you will learn how to work closely and effectively with staff an
13、d with other students. Below is a brief set of principles describing the expectations that these reciprocal relations depend upon.Staff will: Provide you with full documentation for each module that you take: this will include a statement of aims and objectives, a reading list, clearly defined asses
14、sment tasks, and marking criteria. Provide you with prompt and detailed feedback: all assessed work will normally be returned to you within three term-time weeks. Staff will also be available during designated Feedback Weeks to discuss your performance in specific essays, exams, presentations, etc.,
15、 and will be available at other times for instance, during office hours or by appointment to discuss your progress with you. (Feedback includes: comments on assignment cover-sheets, tick-boxes on cover-sheets, annotations in the body of submitted work, comments where applicable on essay-plans and, e
16、.g., practice-commentaries, together with advice and comments offered in person during, for example, Feedback Weeks, office hours, practice-presentation sessions, one-to-one appointments, etc. Feedback is input from staff that helps you to improve your performance.)
