5、signments including the case study assignment. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Supply chain management is recognized as a required core competency for most firms today. This course provides a capstone experience to the fields of operations and logistics through developing an understanding of the managerial issu

6、es and challenges of developing and implementing a firms supply chain strategy. The International Center for Competitive Excellence states that “supply chain management is the integration of business processes from end user through original suppliers that provide products, services and information t

7、hat add value for customers.” This includes all the activities involved in delivering a product from raw material through to the customer including: sourcing raw materials and parts, manufacturing and assembly, warehousing and inventory tracking, order entry and order management, distribution OSCM/L

8、SCM 487 Syllabus Page 2 of 10 across all channels, delivery to the customer, and the information systems necessary to monitor all of these activities. Supply chain management coordinates and integrates all of these activities into a seamless process. It has been noted that competition today is no lo

9、nger firm vs. firm, but supply chain vs. supply chain. Elements of supply chain management have been studied and practiced for some time in marketing, logistics and operations management courses. This course will integrate these different perspectives to develop an understanding of how to manage a s

10、upply chain. Effective supply chain strategies take into account the interactions of the various supply chain partners. Particular attention will be given to the notion of the supply chain as a “system” of firms working towards satisfying customers. Supply chain risk management will be another const

11、ant theme. Specific examples from the food industry will be used to illustrate concepts. We will use cases, current articles, and guest speakers to investigate the strategic influence of these functions and the new approaches firms are using to better manage the process that acquires, transforms and

12、 moves materials and services. The class will combine lecture and discussion focused on critical thinking regarding assigned topics. Advanced preparation is essential for effective class participation. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Develop an understanding of logistics, operations and supply chain management a

13、nd their role in supporting the business strategy. Discuss the impact of supply chain management on the success and profitability of organizations. Identify current problems, issues and trends faced by supply chain managers. Develop an understanding of the individual processes of supply chain manage

14、ment and their interrelationships within a company and across companies. Develop an understanding of the effective supply chain management tools and techniques. Strengthen integrative management analytical and problem-solving skills. COURSE MATERIAL: In pursuit of the course description above, this

15、course has been structured with assigned readings from the required textbook and course packet. Additionally, planned class lectures, guest lectures, and other activities will be used throughout the semester.
