It is as important, if not more so, than the physical address of a business. The d
2、omain is also a part of your brand. Once selected, it is important to provide consistency to your visitors and/or customers by remaining at your address.What is a Domain Name?A domain name (Web address) is your Internet identity and your unique online brand. Customers will remember and use this addr
3、ess to find your Web site, your products or your services. For example the domain name (Web address) SantaBarbaraCA.gov represents the City of Santa Barbaras Government Web site. When you type SantaBarbaraCA.gov into a Web browser or send e-mail to someone at SantaBarbaraCA.gov, the Domain Name Syst
4、em (DNS) translates SantaBarbaraCA.gov into the Internet Protocol (IP) numbers used by the Internet to locate destinations and connects you to the Citys web site.Domain Name Constraints1) Domain Names must contain three (3) to sixty-three (63) characters. This is excluding the www. and the top-level
5、 domain or domain extension.2) Domain Names may only contain letters (a-z), numbers (0-9) and dashes (-).3) Domain Names may not start or end with a dash.4) Domain Names are not case-sensitive.Picking a Domain Name1) Pick a domain name that matches your brand.2) Your domain name should be easy and n
6、ot confusing to translate verbally.a) A dash is probably not a good idea.b) Avoid hard-to-spell words.c) Avoid homophones (words with alternate spellings).d) Avoid numbers because visitors may not know if it is a numeral or a word. Most businesses prefer a .com domain name because it is a highly recognized symbol for having a b
9、usiness presence on the Internet.2) .net represents the word network, and is most commonly used by Internet service providers, Web-hosting companies or other businesses that are directly involved in the infrastructure of the Internet. Additionally, some businesses choose domain names with a .net ext
10、ension for their intranet Websites.3) .org represents the word organization, and is primarily used by non-profits groups or trade associations.4) .biz is used for small business Web sites.5) .info is for credible resource Web sites and signifies a resource web site. It is the most popular extension
11、beyond .com, .net and .org.6) .us is for American Web sites and is the newest extension. It has the largest amount of available names in inventory.7) .tv is for rich content/multi-media Web sites, commonly used within the entertainment or media industry.Selecting Your Domain Extension1) The .com ext
12、ension is by far the most common. Many non-commercial entities use the .com extension because it is what most people try first. It is also the default extension in Microsoft Internet Explorer when you type a domain into the address field and touch Ctrl-Enter.2) If you need to protect your domain fro
13、m competitors, it is a good idea to get all three of the top domain extensions; .com, .net, and .org.3) If you acquire more than one extension you may either redirect or resolve each domain. 14、tration. Here are but a few. Go to these providers and enter the domain name you desire. They will tell you if it is already taken, and often times, recommend similar domains that are not taken.
