It is believed that t

3、he material world engenders and develops by the promotion of yin and yang. The five objects: wood fire, earth, metal and water, are the fundamental elements to form the world and also are indispensable in the daily life of the human beings. These five kinds of objects possess the inter-promoting and

4、s inter-restraining relationship and stay in the constant motion and change. This viewpoint was extensively utilized in the ancient natural sciences to explain all the phenomena of the nature. The utilization of the theories if yin and yang and the five elements in the medical field is able to expla

5、in the physiological functions and pathological conditions of the human body and guide the diagnosis and treatment and becomes an important component part in the theory of Chinese medicine.1. The Theory of Yin and YangThe concept of yin and yang is the generalization of the two opposite aspect in so

6、me related objects and phenomena in the natural world. Not only can it represent the two opposite objects, but also it can represent the two opposite aspects existing within the interior of the same object.All the objects in the universe include the two opposite aspects of yin and yang, such as day

7、and night, fine and overcast, heat and cold, motion and tranquility, etc. Due to the motion and change of the two aspects of yin and yang, all the objects are formed and the development and change of the objects are promoted. Therefore it is said: ”Yin and yang are the way of heaven and earth.”In th

8、e theory and clinical practice of Chinese medicine, the basic viewpoints in the theory of yin and yang: the attribution of yin and yang, the divisibility of yin and yang, the interdependence of yin and yang, the inter-restraint of yin and yang, the mutual transformation of yin and yang, are used wid

9、ely to explain the tissues, structure, physiological activities, pathological changes of the human body and to explain the prognosis of diseases as well as the pattern identification and treatment. The above-mentioned viewpoints in the theory of yin and yang are not isolated. They are mutually relat

10、ed and mutually influenced. In both the theory and practice of Chinese medicine, only by the correct comprehension of the basic contents in the theory of yin and yang, can it be possible to apply the basic viewpoints in the theory of yin and yang for analyzing the clinical symptoms, identifying the

11、patterns of diseases, deciding the principles of treatment and choosing the therapies and herbs more reasonably and properly.2. The Theory of the Five ElementsThe theory of five elements holds that all the phenomena in the universe are composed by the movement and mutation of five objects: wood, fir

12、e, earth, metal and water. In the theory of Chinese medicine, the attributes of these five objects such as wood, fire, earth, metal and water are deduced abstractly, by the assistance of the inter-promoting and inter-restraining relationship existing among these five kinds of objects, to explain the

13、 physiology and pathology of the human body as well as their relationship to the outside environment, so as to guide the diagnosis and treatment.2.1 The characteristics and classification of the five elementsThe theory of the five elements generalizes abstractly the different characteristics of the

14、five objects: wood, fire, earth, metal and water, to classify the internal organs and tissues into the five elements respectively by analogy and to explain the physiological characteristics of the zang -fu organs by the nature of the five elements.1) Wood is the bending and the straightening, having

15、 the characteristics of growth, up-bearing, and effusion. 2) Fire is the flaming upwards, having the quality of heat temperature and upward motion.3) Earth is the sowing and reaping, representing the planting a harvesting of corps and the bringing forth of phenomena.4) Metal is the working of change

16、, having the qualities of purification, elimination and contraction.5) Water is the moistening and descending to low places, having the qualities of moistening, downward movement and coldness.2.2 The inter-promotion, interaction, overaction and counteraction of the five elementsThe theory of the five elements is to explain the relationship among the objects by the inter-promotion and interaction of the five elements. It can also be used to explain the internal relationship among the
