2、exemplifiesthedeeptiesandrespectbetweenournations.Idontknowwhathesaid,butIhopeitwasgood.(Laughter.)WhatIdliketodoistomakesomeopeningcomments,andthenwhatImreallylookingforwardtodoingistakingquestions,notonlyfromstudentswhoareintheaudience,butalsowevereceivedquestionsonline,whichwillbeaskedbysomeofthe
3、studentswhoarehereintheaudience,aswellasbyAmbassadorHuntsman.AndIamverysorrythatmyChineseisnotasgoodasyourEnglish,butIamlookingforwardtothischancetohaveadialogue.ThisismyfirsttimetravelingtoChina,andImexcitedtoseethismajesticcountry.Here,inShanghai,weseethegrowththathascaughttheattentionoftheworld-t
4、hesoaringskyscrapers,thebustlingstreetsandentrepreneurialactivity.AndjustasImimpressedbythesesignsofChinasjourneytothe21stcentury,ImeagertoseethoseancientplacesthatspeaktousfromChinasdistantpast.TomorrowandthenextdayIhopetohaveachancewhenIminBeijingtoseethemajestyoftheForbiddenCityandthewonderoftheG
5、reatWall.Truly,thisisanationthatencompassesbotharichhistoryandabeliefinthepromiseofthefuture.Thesamecanbesaidoftherelationshipbetweenourtwocountries.Shanghai,ofcourse,isacitythathasgreatmeaninginthehistoryoftherelationshipbetweentheUnitedStatesandChina.Itwashere,37yearsago,thattheShanghaiCommuniqueo
6、penedthedoortoanewchapterofengagementbetweenourgovernmentsandamongourpeople.However,Americastiestothiscity-andtothiscountry-stretchbackfurther,totheearliestdaysofAmericasindependence.In1784,ourfoundingfather,GeorgeWashington,commissionedtheEmpressofChina,ashipthatsetsailfortheseshoressothatitcouldpu
7、rsuetradewiththeQingDynasty.Washingtonwantedtoseetheshipcarrytheflagaroundtheglobe,andtoforgenewtieswithnationslikeChina.ThisisacommonAmericanimpulse-thedesiretoreachfornewhorizons,andtoforgenewpartnershipsthataremutuallybeneficial.Overthetwocenturiesthathavefollowed,thecurrentsofhistoryhavesteeredt
8、herelationshipbetweenourcountriesinmanydirections.Andeveninthemidstoftumultuouswinds,ourpeoplehadopportunitiestoforgedeepandevendramaticties.Forinstance,AmericanswillneverforgetthehospitalityshowntoourpilotswhowereshotdownoveryoursoilduringWorldWarII,andcaredforbyChinesecivilianswhoriskedallthatthey
9、hadbydoingso.AndChineseveteransofthatwarstillwarmlygreetthoseAmericanveteranswhoreturntothesiteswheretheyfoughttohelpliberateChinafromoccupation.Adifferentkindofconnectionwasmadenearly40yearsagowhenthefrostbetweenourcountriesbegantothawthroughthesimplegameoftabletennis.Theveryunlikelynatureofthiseng
10、agementcontributedtoitssuccess-becauseforallourdifferences,bothourcommonhumanityandoursharedcuriositywererevealed.AsoneAmericanplayerdescribedhisvisittoChina-ThepeoplearejustlikeusThecountryisverysimilartoAmerica,butstillverydifferent.OfcoursethissmallopeningwasfollowedbytheachievementoftheShanghaiC
11、ommunique,andtheeventualestablishmentofformalrelationsbetweentheUnitedStatesandChinain1979.Andinthreedecades,justlookathowfarwehavecome.In1979,tradebetweentheUnitedStatesandChinastoodatroughly$5billion-todayittopsover$400billioneachyear.Thecommerceaffectsourpeopleslivesinsomanyways.Americaimportsfro
12、mChinamanyofthecomputerpartsweuse,theclotheswewear;andweexporttoChinamachinerythathelpspoweryourindustry.ThistradecouldcreateevenmorejobsonbothsidesofthePacific,whileallowingourpeopletoenjoyabetterqualityoflife.Andasdemandbecomesmorebalanced,itcanleadtoevenbroaderprosperity.In1979,thepoliticalcooper
13、ationbetweentheUnitedStatesandChinawasrootedlargelyinoursharedrivalrywiththeSovietUnion.Today,wehaveapositive,constructiveandcomprehensiverelationshipthatopensthedoortopartnershiponthekeyglobalissuesofourtime-economicrecoveryandthedevelopmentofcleanenergy;stoppingthespreadofnuclearweaponsandthescour
14、geofclimatechange;thepromotionofpeaceandsecurityinAsiaandaroundtheglobe.AlloftheseissueswillbeontheagendatomorrowwhenImeetwithPresidentHu.Andin1979,theconnectionsamongourpeoplewerelimited.Today,weseethecuriosityofthoseping-pongplayersmanifestedinthetiesthatarebeingforgedacrossmanysectors.Thesecondhi
15、ghestnumberofforeignstudentsintheUnitedStatescomefromChina,andweveseena50percentincreaseinthestudyofChineseamongourownstudents.Therearenearly200friendshipcitiesdrawingourcommunitiestogether.AmericanandChinesescientistscooperateonnewresearchanddiscovery.Andofcourse,YaoMingisjustonesignalofoursharedlo
