3、npeoplewhobecomeheroesatamomentsnotice,divingintoharmswaytosaveothers.flyingacrossthecountrytoputoutafire.drivingforhourstobailoutafloodedtown.AndIveseenitinourmenandwomeninuniformandourproudmilitaryfamilies.inwoundedwarriorswhotellmetheyrenotjustgoingtowalkagain,theyregoingtorun,andtheyregoingtorun
4、marathons.intheyoungmanblindedbyabombinAfghanistanwhosaid,simply,.Idgivemyeyes100timesagaintohavethechancetodowhatIhavedoneandwhatIcanstilldo.Everyday,thepeopleImeetinspireme.everyday,theymakemeproud.everydaytheyremindmehowblessedwearetoliveinthegreatestnationonearth.ServingasyourFirstLadyisanhonora
5、ndaprivilege.butbackwhenwefirstcametogetherfouryearsago,Istillhadsomeconcernsaboutthisjourneywedbegun.WhileIbelieveddeeplyinmyhusbandsvisionforthiscountry.andIwascertainhewouldmakeanextraordinaryPresident.likeanymother,Iwasworriedaboutwhatitwouldmeanforourgirlsifhegotthatchance.Howwouldwekeepthemgro
6、undedundertheglareofthenationalspotlight?Howwouldtheyfeelbeinguprootedfromtheirschool,theirfriends,andtheonlyhometheydeverknown?OurlifebeforemovingtoWashingtonwasfilledwithsimplejoys.Saturdaysatsoccergames,Sundaysatgrandmashouse.andadatenightforBarackandmewaseitherdinneroramovie,becauseasanexhausted
7、mom,Icouldntstayawakeforboth.Andthetruthis,Ilovedthelifewehadbuiltforourgirls.IdeeplylovedthemanIhadbuiltthatlifewith.andIdidntwantthattochangeifhebecamePresident.IlovedBarackjustthewayhewas.Yousee,eventhoughbackthenBarackwasaSenatorandapresidentialcandidate.tome,hewasstilltheguywhodpickedmeupforour
8、datesinacarthatwassorustedout,Icouldactuallyseethepavementgoingbythroughaholeinthepassengersidedoor.hewastheguywhoseproudestpossessionwasacoffeetablehedfoundinadumpster,andwhoseonlypairofdecentshoeswashalfasizetoosmall.ButwhenBarackstartedtellingmeabouthisfamilythatswhenIknewIhadfoundakindredspirit,

10、pumpoperatoratthecitywaterplant,andhewasdiagnosedwithMultipleSclerosiswhenmybrotherandIwereyoung.Andevenasakid,Iknewtherewereplentyofdayswhenhewasinpain.Iknewtherewereplentyofmorningswhenitwasastruggleforhimtosimplygetoutofeverymorning,Iwatchedmyfatherwakeupwithasmile,grabhiswalker,prophimselfupagai
11、nstthebathroomsink,andslowlyshaveandbuttonhisuniform.Andwhenhereturnedhomeafteralongdayswork,mybrotherandIwouldstandatthetopofthestairstoourlittleapartment,patientlywaitingtogreethim.watchingashereacheddowntoliftoneleg,andthentheother,toslowlyclimbhiswayintoourdespitethesechallenges,mydadhardlyeverm
12、issedadayofwork.heandmymomweredeterminedtogivemeandmybrotherthekindofeducationtheycouldonlydreamof.AndwhenmybrotherandIfinallymadeittocollege,nearlyallofourtuitioncamefromstudentloansandgrants.Butmydadstillhadtopayatinyportionofthattuitionhimself.Andeverysemester,hewasdeterminedtopaythatbillrightont
13、ime,eventakingoutloanswhenhefellshort.Hewassoproudtobesendinghiskidstocollege.andhemadesurewenevermissedaregistrationdeadlinebecausehischeckwaslate.Yousee,formydad,thatswhatitmeanttobeaman.Likesomanyofus,thatwasthemeasureofhissuccessinlifebeingabletoearnadecentlivingthatallowedhimtosupporthisfamily.
14、AndasIgottoknowBarack,Irealizedthateventhoughhedgrownupallthewayacrossthecountry,hedbeenbroughtupjustlikeme.Barackwasraisedbyasinglemotherwhostruggledtopaythebills,andbygrandparentswhosteppedinwhensheneededhelp.Baracksgrandmotherstartedoutasasecretaryatacommunitybank.andshemovedquicklyuptheranks.but
15、likesomanywomen,shehitaglassceiling.Andforyears,mennomorequalifiedthanshewasmenshehadactuallytrainedwerepromoteduptheladderaheadofher,earningmoreandmoremoneywhileBaracksfamilycontinuedtoscrapeby.Butdayafterday,shekeptonwakingupatdawntocatchthebus.arrivingatworkbeforeanyoneelse.givingherbestwithoutcomplaintorregret.AndshewouldoftentellBarack,Solongasyoukidsdowell,Bar,thatsallthatreallymatters.LikesomanyAmericanfamilies,ourfamilieswerentaskingformuch.Theydidntbegrudgeanyoneelsessuccessorcarethatothershadmuchmorethantheydid.infact,theyadmir
