6、travel.Whilemanyofourcitizensprosperothersdoubtthepromiseeventhejusticeofourowncountry.TheambitionsofsomeAmericansarelimitedbyfailingschoolsandhiddenprejudiceandthecircumstancesoftheirbirthandsometimesourdifferencesrunsodeepitseemsweshareacontinentbutnotacountry.Wedonotacceptthisandwewillnotallowit.
7、OurunityourunionistheseriousworkofleadersandcitizensineverygenerationandthisismysolemnpledgeIwillworktobuildasinglenationofjusticeandopportunity.IknowthisisinourreachbecauseweareguidedbyapowerlargerthanourselveswhocreatesusequalinHisimageandweareconfidentinprinciplesthatuniteandleadusonward.Americah
8、asneverbeenunitedbybloodorbirthorsoil.Weareboundbyidealsthatmoveusbeyondourbackgroundsliftusaboveourinterestsandteachuswhatitmeanstobecitizens.Everychildmustbetaughttheseprinciples.EverycitizenmustupholdthemandeveryimmigrantbyembracingtheseidealsmakesourcountrymorenotlessAmerican.Todayweaffirmanewco
9、mmitmenttoliveoutournationspromisethroughcivilitycouragecompassionandcharacter.Americaatitsbestmatchesacommitmenttoprinciplewithaconcernforcivility.Acivilsocietydemandsfromeachofusgoodwillandrespectfairdealingandforgiveness.Someseemtobelievethatourpoliticscanaffordtobepettybecauseinatimeofpeacethest
10、akesofourdebatesappearsmall.ButthestakesforAmericaareneversmall.Ifourcountrydoesnotleadthecauseoffreedomitwillnotbeled.Ifwedonotturntheheartsofchildrentowardknowledgeandcharacterwewilllosetheirgiftsandunderminetheiridealism.Ifwepermitoureconomytodriftanddeclinethevulnerablewillsuffermost.Wemustliveu
11、ptothecallingweshare.Civilityisnotatacticorasentiment.Itisthedeterminedchoiceoftrustovercynicismofcommunityoverchaos.Thiscommitmentifwekeepitisawaytosharedaccomplishment.Americaatitsbestisalsocourageous.Ournationalcouragehasbeenclearintimesofdepressionandwarwhendefendingcommondangersdefinedourcommon
12、wemustchooseiftheexampleofourfathersandmotherswillinspireusorcondemnus.Wemustshowcourageinatimeofblessingbyconfrontingproblemsinsteadofpassingthemontofuturegenerations.TogetherwewillreclaimAmericasschoolsbeforeignoranceandapathyclaimmoreyoungliveswewillreformSocialSecurityandMedicaresparingourchildr
13、enfromstruggleswehavethepowertopreventwewillreducetaxestorecoverthemomentumofoureconomyandrewardtheeffortandenterpriseofworkingAmericanswewillbuildourdefensesbeyondchallengelestweaknessinvitechallengeandwewillconfrontweaponsofmassdestructionsothatanewcenturyissparednewenemiesoflibertyandourcountrysh
14、ouldmakenomistakeAmericaremainsengagedintheworldbyhistoryandbychoiceshapingabalanceofpowerthatfavorsfreedom.Wewilldefendouralliesandourinterestswewillshowpurposewithoutarrogancewewillmeetaggressionandbadfaithwithresolveandstrengthandtoallnationswewillspeakforthevaluesthatgaveournationbirth.Americaat
15、itsbestiscompassionate.InthequietofAmericanconscienceweknowthatdeeppersistentpovertyisunworthyofournationspromise.Whateverourviewsofitscausewecanagreethatchildrenatriskarenotatfault.AbandonmentandabusearenotactsofGodtheyarefailuresoflove.Theproliferationofprisonshowevernecessaryisnosubstituteforhope
16、andorderinoursouls.Wherethereissufferingthereisinneedarenotstrangerstheyarecitizensnotproblemsbutprioritiesandallofusarediminishedwhenanyarehopeless.Governmenthasgreatresponsibilitiesforpublicsafetyandpublichealthforcivilrightsandcommonschools.Yetcompassionistheworkofanationnotjustagovernment.Someneedsandhurtsaresodeeptheywillonlyrespondtoamentorstouchorapastorsprayer.Churchandcharitysynagogueandmosquelendourcommunitiestheirhumanityandtheywillhaveanhonoredplaceinourplansandinourl
