2、springrebornintheworldsoldestdemocracy,thatbringsforththevisionandcouragetoreinventAmerica.WhenourfoundersboldlydeclaredAmericasindependencetotheworldandourpurposestotheAlmighty,theyknewthatAmerica,toendure,wouldhavetochange.Notchangeforchangessake,butchangetopreserveAmericasideals;life,liberty,thep
3、ursuitofhappiness.Thoughwemarchtothemusicofourtime,ourmissionistimeless.EachgenerationofAmericansmustdefinewhatitmeanstobeanAmerican.Onbehalfofournation,Isalutemypredecessor,PresidentBush,forhishalf-centuryofservicetoAmerica.AndIthankthemillionsofmenandwomenwhosesteadfastnessandsacrificetriumphedove
4、rDepression,fascismandCommunism.Today,agenerationraisedintheshadowsoftheColdWarassumesnewresponsibilitiesinaworldwarmedbythesunshineoffreedombutthreatenedstillbyancienthatredsandnewplagues.Raisedinuivaledprosperity,weinheritaneconomythatisstilltheworldsstrongest,butisweakenedbybusinessfailures,stagn
5、antwages,increasinginequality,anddeepdivisionsamongourpeople.WhenGeorgeWashingtonfirsttooktheoathIhavejustsworntouphold,newstraveledslowlyacrossthelandbyhorsebackandacrosstheoceanbyboat.Now,thesightsandsoundsofthisceremonyarebroadcastinstantaneouslytobillionsaroundtheworld.Communicationsandcommercea
6、reglobal;investmentismobile;technologyisalmostmagical;andambitionforabetterlifeisnowuniversal.Weearnourlivelihoodinpeacefulcompetitionwithpeopleallacrosstheearth.Profoundandpowerfulforcesareshakingandremakingourworld,andtheurgentquestionofourtimeiswhetherwecanmakechangeourfriendandnotourenemy.Thisne
7、wworldhasalreadyeichedthelivesofmillionsofAmericanswhoareabletocompeteandwininit.Butwhenmostpeopleareworkingharderforless;whenotherscannotworkatall;whenthecostofhealthcaredevastatesfamiliesandthreatenstobankruptmanyofourenterprises,greatandsmall;whenfearofcrimerobslaw-abidingcitizensoftheirfreedom;a
8、ndwhenmillionsofpoorchildrencannotevenimaginetheliveswearecallingthemtolead,wehavenotmadechangeourfriend.Weknowwehavetofacehardtruthsandtakestrongsteps.Butwehavenotdoneso.Instead,wehavedrifted,andthatdriftinghaserodedourresources,fracturedoureconomy,andshakenourconfidence.Thoughourchallengesarefears
9、ome,soareourstrengths.AndAmericanshaveeverbeenarestless,questing,hopefulpeople.Wemustbringtoourtasktodaythevisionandwillofthosewhocamebeforeus.Fromourrevolution,theCivilWar,totheGreatDepressiontothecivilrightsmovement,ourpeoplehavealwaysmusteredthedeterminationtoconstructfromthesecrisesthepillarsofo
10、urhistory.ThomasJeffersonbelievedthattopreservetheveryfoundationsofournation,wewouldneeddramaticchangefromtimetotime.Well,myfellowcitizens,thisisourtime.Letusembraceit.Ourdemocracymustbenotonlytheenvyoftheworldbuttheengineofourownrenewal.ThereisnothingwrongwithAmericathatcannotbecuredbywhatisrightwi
