2、abstract,This study examined the utility of the newly developed Adolescent Friendship Attachment Scale (AFAS) for the prediction of adolescent psychological health and school attitude. High school students (266 males, 229 females) were recruited from private and public schools in the Australian Capi

3、tal Territory with ages of participants ranging from 13 to 19 years. Selfreport measures of depression, self-esteem, self-competence and school attitude were administered in addition to the AFAS and a short-form of the Inventory of Parental and Peer Attachment (IPPA). Regression analyses revealed th

4、at the AFAS Anxious and Avoidant scales added to the prediction of depression, self-esteem, self-competence, and school attitude beyond the contribution of the IPPA. It is concluded that the AFAS taps aspects of adolescent attachment relationships not assessed by the IPPA and provides a useful contr

A body of research,however, does indicate that these relationships are linked to key developmental tasks. Individuation from the family, the formation

7、 of personal identity, exploration of sexuality, conforming (or otherwise) to educational and career expectations are all occurring when the adolescent is learning how to relate to peers and what to expect from intimate relationships outside of the family. Intimacy and emotional support are already

8、emerging in friendships by the middle-school years (Berndt Wilkinson, 2004). Empirical evidence supports the view that friendships, in general, play a role in the psychological health and adaptive functioning of adolescents and that positive intimate friendships with peers enhance psychological well

13、e current crosssectional study seeks to clarify the relationship between parental, peer, and best friend sources of support and their relative associations with adolescent psychological adjustment. It is argued that while the IPPA peer attachment measure has been found to be related to psychological

14、 adjustment for adolescents, the pattern of results it produces, indicates that this is because it taps into the quality of clique peer group relationships rather than dyadic attachment processes. Because adolescent best friend relationships are argued to have an attachment form these relationships

15、can be seen as distinct from clique relationships.
