3、fio Marullo is the first person who tries to influence Ethan with his point of view of money and business. Alfio Marullo is Ethans boss, the owner of a grocery store where Ethan works. This man sets the tricks how to get profit, which latter on those tricks become pressure on Ethan. Actually, Marull
4、o is a good person, he only wants to help Ethan how to keep a good business. He knows that Ethan is smart but he is too honest. Ethan once owned the store in which he is now working. He went bankrupt because the Great Depression has collapsed the economy of America, many big companies, small compani
5、es and stores got bankrupt; and so did Ethan, “Im try to learn you good business so you dont go broke no more”(24). Beside that, he also sees that Ethan gets bankrupt because of his honesty. In Marullos point of view, he thinks that Ethan is very different from the other people around him. People ru
6、n a race to get a lot of money using many tricks, including dishonest ways, but Ethan stands in his own belief that everything must be done in an honest way. Marullo thinks that Ethans way of thinking should be changed in order to get a lot of profit, as stated by him, “ Youve got to learn the trick
7、s, kid, or you go broke”( Steinbeck 22).Marullo tells him that a good business and money cannot be separated. He has a kind of perception about money, money is nice and money is not friendly, but he emphasizes more on the words “ money is nice”, as he says, “ Business is money. Money is not friendly
8、, kid, maybe you too friendly-too nice. Money is not nice. Money gets no friends but more money”(24 ). Marullo thinks that money is not nice when he thinks that he could lose his friends or he could get no friend because of it. He also thinks that money is nice because money can get more and more mo
9、ney. He is one of members of New England society who also follow Americans dream. He wants to be number one; he wants to be rich and has high social status in his society. This could be seen in the way he persuades Ethan to follow his value or most of the Americans value. He gives advice to Ethan to
10、 look after number one. he tries to persuade Ethan by saying that actually Ethan does not lose anything if he looks after number one, as he says toward Ethan, “ You got to look after number one. You dont look after one, whosell lo it? You got to learn kid ”(22). He wants Ethan to learn and change hi
11、s people in the society also does it. People run a race; compete to be number one in the society, to be rich, and respected. They use every ways, including dishonorable ways, which are full of tricks. Ethan does not simply accept what Marullo has said; he fights back Marullo Ideas. He keeps his hone
12、st belief, as he says, “Im not a chiseler, Marullo”(23). He also wants Marullo to understand that he cannot really cheat or do some dirty tricks only just for the sake of money. 14、his offer to cheat. Biggers is a perpetually young man who supplies materials in Marullos grocery store. He works as a salesman for B.B.D. and D. Company. He is a smart man. He offers Ethan a deal to take profit from Marullos price agreement with B.B.D. and D. Company. He gives Ethan five percent fr
15、om the price agreement, while Marullo still has to pay just as usual or like the price agreement. Biggers offers five-percent profile. Ethan does not realize what Biggers means, he thinks that Marullo is the one who deserves to get the discount. He can understand when Biggers explains his intention
16、clearly, that those five percent will be in Ethans pocket, not others pocket, as stated by Biggers, “ You dont get it. I dont want Marullo. This five percent would be in cash-no checks, no records, no trouble with the lax boys, just nice clean green cabbage from my hand to your hand and from your hand to your pocket ”(26).There are words “just nice clean green cabbage”. Biggers means that money is nice like green cabbage.
