Principle of interpreting idioms with idioms: By adhering to this principle, we can retain the vividness and forceful effect of idioms: e.g. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. 心有余而力不足. 有钱能使鬼推磨. 5、 not his fists.,3. Principle of Achieving Brevity,With only a few simple but witty words, idioms can express profound meanings. Special efforts should be made to avoid wordiness in interpreting idioms so as to achieve the same brevity, e.g. Give him an inch and he will take an ell. 得寸进尺. 天有不测风云，人有旦夕
6、祸福. The unexpected always happens.,II. Practical advice for handling idioms:,1. When interpreting idioms, we must take into full consideration the differences between the Chinese and English cultures and languages. We should avoid using seemingly identical but actually erroneous idioms in interpreti
7、ng. 例: 借刀杀人 kill somebody by anothers hand/make use of one person to get rid of another,英汉习语有大量貌同实异的习语,应注意区分:,例: have a bone in ones throat 正: 难以启齿move heaven and earth正: 千方百计, 想尽办法,(2) 必须力求符合目标语的语言习惯， 切记逐字逐句地硬译,如 look before you leap (三思而后行) 不可译为“先看后跳” (3) 必须在忠实原文的基础上，尽可能兼顾译文的表达效果。 吃一堑，长一智 A fall i
