Interpretation of times (倍数的译法),In scientific English the use of times is quite commo
7、n. As for the expression of times, there are many differences between English and Chinese. For example, “to increase 4 times”, in Chinese it can be put into “增加了3倍“, and also be put into增加到4倍. In English we can say “to reduce 4 times” but in Chinese we cannot say in the same way. We can say “to redu
8、ce three quarter” (减少四分之三), or “to be reduced to one quarter”.,一、“几倍于”的译法,英语表示一事物的某种数量为另一事物的几倍时，通常使用一下三种结构来表达：1）“倍数asas”的译法英语表示“几倍于”常用倍数加asas即 “X times + as 形容词（副词） as” 结构（X代表任意整数）。因此又译为“是的X倍”、“为的X倍”或“X倍于”，其倍数照译不减。如果要译成双方比较相差的倍数，则将其倍数减一，译成“比（X1）倍”。如 “10 times as large as”, 译成“大小是（为）的10倍”，或“比大9倍”。 On

In 1980 the export value of machine tool was 8 times that of 1970. 1980年机床的出口数为1970年的8倍。,二、“增加几倍”的译法,英语表示“增加几倍”，常用具有增
11、加意义的动词加倍数，或只用具有倍数意义的动词。句中的倍数是指所增加的倍数与原有数之和。因此若译出净增加的倍数，就将原文减一，译成“增加了（X1）倍“，或”增加（X1）倍”。若要译出增加部分与原有部分之和，则照译不减，译成“增加到X倍”。,1）“表示增加意义的动词倍数”表增加意义的动词有increase、rise、grow、raise、exceed等。与其连用的倍数有三种形式：“数词times”;数词与fold组成的合成词;“by a factor of +数词“。比如3倍，又用3 times 或 three-fold（threefold），也可用by a factor of three来表示。

13、five years. 例: 我买进这些邮票后他们的价格已经提高了三倍。 译文：The value of these stamps has multiplied three-fold after I bought them.,综上所述,翻译“几倍于”和“增加几倍”时，汉语有两种不同的表示法，两者正好相差一倍，所以要多加注意。以three times为例： 包括原来底数的译法：“是三倍”、“为三倍”、“三倍于”或“增加到三倍”等。 不包括原来底数的译法：“大两倍”、“长两倍”、“增加两倍”或“增加了两倍”等。,三、倍数减少的译法,英语中还可以用具有减少意义的词加倍数来表示减少的数量。句中的倍数是
14、指原量为现量的倍数。由于汉语不能说“减少多少倍”，所以汉译时需要将原文倍数化为分数，译成“减少了”（指减去部分），或译成“减少到“（指剩下部分）。 By using this new process the loss of metal was reduced four times. 采用这种新工艺使金属损耗减少了四分之三。（或译为降到了四分之一）（原量是现量的四倍，原量为一，则现量为1/4） The principal advantage is a four-fold reduction in volume. 主要优点是体积缩小了四分之三。 注： 如果减少的倍数中有小数点，则要换算成不带小数点
15、的分数。比如reduce 4.5 times， 应换算成整数（）后，译成“减少到九分之二”，或“减少了九分之七”。,在中文中，我们不用倍数来表达数量的减少，例如，我们不会说“A比B小X倍”，而是用分数，表达为“A比B小几分之几”。因此，在翻译英语倍数的减少时，需要进行换算，具体规律是英语中所说的“X times smaller”，即是中文中的“减少了X-1X”，或“是1X”。例如：“A is four times smaller than B”译为“A比B小四分之三”，或“A是B的四分之一”； “A is six times smaller than B”译为“A比B小六分之五”，或“A是B的
16、六分之一”。,四比例与百分比的表达法,1 比例的表达方式分两种，表示成正比常用词组：vary with, be proportional to, the morethe more。表示成反比常用词组：vary inversely with, the morethe less。例如： 商品的价格与质量成正比。 The prices of commodities vary with the quality. 如果电压不变，电阻和电流成反比。 If the voltage remains constant, the more the resistance the less the current.,
