4、e influence of culture in language transformation. Many famous translation theorists and translators have contributed their viewpoints, which may seem to be variable from different angle, but a common knowledge has been reached. That is, translation should try to reproduce the closest natural equiva

5、lent message in the receptor language.Translation, as one of the key media, plays a very important role in the activity of culture exchange, but because of the differences both in language and culture, there are inevitably barriers blocking on the way to the smoothly communicating between different

6、languages and different cultures. This shows that translation has a very important mission on its shoulder. What it should do is not only the transferring of languages, but also of culture.For cultural translation as an emerging translation theory is drawing more and more concern from scholars who s

7、tudy translation, this thesis focuses on translation from a cultural translation perspective. Then it narrows this large topic down to English translation of Chinese idioms from a cultural translation perspective, since an idiom is like a mirror reflecting culture, but is relatively difficult to be

8、rendered into another language.Key words: culture; idiom; language transformation摘摘 要要近几年来,翻译学界开始越来越关注文化对语言转换的影响。许多著名的翻译理论和翻译家发表了他们的观点,这些理论从不同的角度看来似乎是多变的,但是最终都达成了一个常识。那就是翻译应该将最贴近的等值信息再创作为接受语言。翻译作为一种重要媒介,在文化交流活动中扮演着十分重要的角色,但因为语言和文化的不同,有许多不可避免的隔阂阻碍着不同语言和不同文化间的顺畅交流。这表明翻译有着其重要的任务。翻译应该做到的是不仅仅转换语言,而且要转换文化

9、。由于文化翻译作为一种新兴的翻译理论越来越引起学者们的关注,因此本文从文化翻译角度撰写。由于习语像镜子一样很好地反映着文化,并且也较难于翻译,因此本文将文化翻译这个宽泛的题目缩小为“从文化翻译角度看汉语习语的英译” 。关键词:关键词:文化;习语;语言转换 Discussion on the Cultural Elements in the Translation of Chinese IdiomsI.IntroductionCulture, the soul of a nation, is like a pearl glittering in the human world. But it i

10、s too inclusive to define. In history, innumerous scholars have given their definitions to culture, whether long or short, detailed or succinct. Since translation is for communication between cultures, this thesis has quoted Bates and Plogs detailed definition that terms culture as “a system of shar

11、ed beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that the members of a society use to cope with their world and with one another, and that are transmitted from generation to generation through learning“ (Samovar, 2000: 36). In brief, culture is “the totality of beliefs and practices of a societ

12、y“ (Nida, 2001:78).However, culture is only an abstract word. It has to be expressed, embodied and symbolized by language, as Kramsch (2000: 3) has pointed out. Therefore, culture can never be separated from language, or from translation either, which is a bridge between language and culture. In rec

13、ent years, “culture” and “translation” are being increasingly linked together. In 1990, Susan Bassnett and Andre Lefevere formally presented the proposition of “cultural turn“ in translation studies for the first time. From then on, translators and translation theorists have paid more and more atten

14、tion to the cultural factors in translation. Many world-renowned translation theorists, including Eugene A. Nida, Susan Bassnett, Daniel Shaw, Larry A. Samovar and so on, have discussed in depth the relations between culture and translation in their works. Although cultural translation has not becom

15、e the mainstream in translation theories, it is emerging with a strong momentum, just as Bassnett has predicted.Idiom is like a mirror that reflects culture in a best way. According to Websters New World Dictionary of the American Language (1972), idiom means “an accepted phrase, construction, or expression contrary to the usual patterns of the language or having a meaning different from the language or having a meaning different fro
