There are so many words which have a close relation with animals in both English and Chinese culture. The vocabula
3、ries of different language reflect differences of cultural development and connotations. On the other hand, the evolution of animal words also can reflect the change of society in some aspects. Because of the influence of cultural ingredient in history, custom, value, history, custom, pricing view,
4、religion, belief and other factors, the two languages, Chinese and English, give their unique cultural connotations to animal words. The aim of this paper is to use some examples to analyze the different cultural connotation of West and East animal words, and by contrasting the differences of custom
5、, religion, geography, and history, we can know the reason that why these differences were caused more clearly. Different language sometimes show different culture. There are rich cultural connotations besides the literal meaning of each word in
7、different languages and different cultural backgrounds, because there are many differences in custom, history, way of thinking, religion and other aspects of cultural factors between English and Chinese. These differences give many Chinese and English animal words some specific meaning or cultural c
8、onnotations, and reflect the differences in their own cultural development respectively. Language is part of culture, therefore, it is impossible to really learn the language if you dont know the model and guidelines of culture. Language and culture are inseparable. As we all know, animals are friends of human beings and they provide the material for human to make a living in the long 2process of human societ

According to Guo Zhuzhang, a famous Chinese linguist, animal words are words indicating animals and expressions or phrases containing those words (1981:121). This paper will use his d

Whats more, animals are the closest species to man so far as their natural attributes concerned (Huang Xiangfeng, 2010). There are plenty of animal words in West and East. Howev
12、er, different countries have different cultural backgrounds, social systems, way of thinking, values and so on. Due to the differences of the own cultural backgrounds and the way of thinking in West and East, different meanings and cultural connotations of animal words in two nations were came into
13、being. Some share the same figurative meanings, some have different symbolic meaning, and even some are contradictory. These differences will contribute to much barriers to our language learning, international communication and translation. Therefore, it is necessary for language learners to clarify
