1、Reading Skills 英语阅读猜词技巧 在英语学习中，我们自然会遇到许多生词。 这时，许多人立即翻阅字典，查找词义。 其 实，这种做法是不科学的。它不但费时费力 ，而且影响阅读速度。事实上，阅读材 料中 的每个词与它前后的词语或句子甚至段落有 着互相制约的关系。我们可以利用语 境（各 种已知信息）推测、判断某些生词的词义。 猜测词义时，可利用以下线索： 一、 针对性解释 针对性解释是作者为了更好的表达思想 ，在文章中对一些重要的概念、难懂的 术语或 词汇等所作的解释。这些解释提 供的信息具有明确的针对性，利用它们 猜词义比较容易通过文章或句子本身给 出的定义或解释，比如利用to be,
2、 to mean等词后面所提供的信息来猜测词义 ，或者通过一些可以重复表达词义的信 息词或短语，如and，or， that is，that is to say，in other words，namely等所提 供的解释猜测词义。 1、定义句eg.-（1）Giraffe is an animal with a very long neck，four legs and orange skin with dark spots （2）Anthropology is the scientific study of man. 句（1）中，如果giraffe是生词，那么根据后面 的解释：长脖子、四条腿、橘红
3、色带黑色斑点 的动物，可猜出其意思为：长颈鹿。 由定义可知，anthropology就是“研究人 类的科学”。Your turn1.A mosquito is a small flying pest that thrusts the skin and then drinks blood.In slang the term “jam” constitutes a state of being in which a person finds himself or herself in a difficult situation.根据以上解释很容易推断出mosquito意为“蚊 子”jam一词在俚语
4、中的意思是“困境”。定义句的谓语动词多为：be, mean, deal with, be considered, to be, refer to,be called, be known as, define, represent, signify, constitute等。2、根据复述猜测词义 虽然复述不如定义那样严谨、详细，但 是提供的信息足以使阅读者猜出生词词 义。 复述部分可以是代词、短语或是从 句。 Semantics, the study of the meaning of words, is necessary if you are to speak and read intell
5、igently. 此例逗号中短语意为“对词意义进行研究的学 科”。该短语与前面生词semantics式同位关系 ，因此我们不难猜出semantics指“语义学”。 在复述中构成同位关系的两部分之间多用逗号连 接，有时也使用破折号，冒号，分 号，引号， 和括号等。 Capacitance, or the ability to store electric charge, is one of the most common characteristics of electronic circuits. 由同位语我们很快猜出生词capacitance词义-电 容量。 All his belongin
6、gsa few articles of clothing and a few booksare here 很显然，在本句中，我们能很容易地利用两个 破折号之间的解释猜测出belongings一词的意思 是“财产、财物”。 Your turn 1. Psychophysiology is a science which deals with the relationship between mind and body 2. Marine biology, the study of oceanic plants and animals and their relation, has further
7、ed the efficient development of fisheries.根据which引导的定语从句的解释就能推断出 psychophysiology一词的意义，即“心理生理学 ”。 同位语“the study of”对“Marine biology”作了解释说 明：“研究海洋动植物以及它们之间的关系”。由此可 见“Marine biology”意为“海洋生物学”。3. Krabacber suffers from SAD, which is short for seasonal affective disorder,a syndrome characterized by seve

Numbers such as 1，2，3，54，289 and 24890 are called whole numbers，or integers. 根据生词SAD后面定语从句which is short for seasonal affective disorder和同 位语a syndrome characterized by severe seasonal mood swings, 我们可以推断出 SAD含义，即“季节性情绪紊乱症”。 integers为“整数”。3.根据举例猜测词义。恰当的举例能够提供猜测生词的重要线 索。 e
9、g- The consequences of epochal events such as wars and great scientific discoveries are not confined to a small geographical area as they were in the past. 句中“战争”和“重大科学发现”是生词 epochal的实例，通过它们我们可以猜出 该词的大致词义为“重要的”，这与其确 切含义“划时代的”十分接近。 二 内在逻辑关系 根据内在逻辑关系推测词义是指 运用语言知识分析和判断相关信息 之间存在的逻辑关系,然后根据逻辑 关系推断生词词义或大致义
10、域。 1 根据对比关系猜测词义 在一个句子或段落中，有对两个事物或 现象进行对比性的描述，我们可以根据 生词或难词的反义词猜测其词义。表示对比关系的词汇和短语主要是unlike，not，but，however，yet， although，while, on the other hand， instead，rather than, despite，in spite of，in contrast 等。Eg-Andrew is one of the most supercilious men I know. His brother, in contrast, is quite humble and
11、modest. 该例中supercilious对许多人来说可能是个 生词，但是句中短语 in contrast（相对照 的，相对比的）可以提示我们supercilious 和后面词组humble and modest（谦卑又谦 虚）是对比关系。分析出这种关系后，我 们便能猜出supercilious意为“目空一切的 ，傲慢的”。 A good supervisor can recognize instantly the adept workers from the unskilled ones. 该句中并未出现上面提到的表示对比关系的词 或短语，但是通过上下文可以判断出句子前后 是对比关系，即
12、把熟练工人与非熟练工人区分 开。这时我们也能够推断出生词adept的词义 ，“熟练的”。 Some liked milk，but others abhorred it 通过句中的转折词but，我们可以猜出 abhor 一词应该是like的反义词，这样就很容易搞清 它的词义为“厌恶”。Your turn- He is usually prompt for all his classes, but today he was late for the traffic jam.“prompt” “准时的”-Though Toms face has been washed quite clean, hi
13、s neck still remains grubby. “grubby” “脏的”。-The boy is not foolish, on the contrary, no one could be more intelligent.intelligent意为“聪明的，有才智的”。2 根据比较关系猜测词义 同对比关系相反，比较关系表示意义上的 相似关系表示比较关系的词和短语主要是 similarly，like，just as，also等。Eg-Green loves to talk，and his brothers are similarly loquacious.该句中副词similarl
14、y表明短语loves to talk与生词loquacious之间的比较关系。 以此可以推断出loquacious词义为“健谈 的”。3 根据因果关系猜测词义 在句子或段落种，若两个事物、现象之间 构成因果关系，我们可以根据这种逻辑关 系推知生词词义。 例如：Tom is considered an autocratic administrator because he makes decisions without seeking the opinions of others. 根据原因状语从句的内容，我们可以推断 出生词autocratic指“独断专行的”。 There were so m
15、any demonstrators in the Red Square that he had to elbow his way through the crowd. 此句为结果状语从句，根据从句的描书“许 多示威者”，我们便可推知elbow的词意“挤 ，挤过”。The girl began to feel homesick because she had been away from her family for years 根据原因状语从句的意思，再加上 homesick本身的构词方法，我们不难想到 它的意思就是“想家” your turn1.Rubber can be made to s

He is such a shrewd businessman that he loses no money in any trade.通过以上三句的因果关系，依据已知部分， 可以猜出elastic意为：有弹性的；turbid意为 ：浑浊的；shrewd意为：精明的。4根据同义词的替代关系猜测词义 在句子或段落种，我们可以利用熟悉的 词语，根据语言环境推断生词词义。 例如：Although he often had the opportunity, Mr. Tri
