8、 a living a life like “a broken winged bird,“ that is, useless and without spirit or reason for living. Life without dreams is also compared to a barren field, lifeless, without fruit. From the poem, we can get the idea that if the black people have no dreams, their life is meaningless. There is no

9、hope for the rising and liberation of the race. The poet encourages the black people to have confidence and never to give up hope for total liberation and a better life. 10、while on a train ride to Mexico, where he would live with his father for one year. He had just graduated from high school in Cleveland, Ohio, making him a mere eighteen years old. When his train crossed the Mississippi River, Hughes was inspired by its beauty and was also reminded of its role in sus

11、taining slavery in America. The sun was setting, and Hughes had a long journey ahead of him. He took out a letter his father had written him and wrote this poem on the back of its pages. 14、n veins.A simple declaration implies the narrators experience and wisdom.This comparison ties humanity to the oldest parts of nature and suggests that the flow human life force is much like the flow of a river. The river symbolizes the linkage of all human life from the earliest time to the present.
