Abstract: With the acceleration of globalization, English has been growing into an international language as the means of communication for people from different countries. Thus here comes the localization of English, and China English is one of the language varieties of English. The term China English comes along with another term——Chinglish. People tend to get confused by China English and Chinglish. This paper analyzes the two in terms of their definitions, features and causes for formation.Key words: China English; Chinglish; differences; transformation1. IntroductionWith the ever-growing globalization, the use of English has reached far beyond the native speaking countries and has established its new role in the new era——international language. During its spread, the language is also experiencing localization, which refers to the combination of local language. Therefore, geographical English variations are adopted both socially and academically. Up till now, Hong Kong English, Singapore English, Indian English and so on have been well recognized. In China, however, the debate over China English and Chinglish is still heated among the linguists and EFL teachers. In a country with millions of English learners, the standards to distinguish the two terms and the methods to teach are foremost essential. 2. Definitions and features of China English In 1980, Professor Ge Chuangui first proposed the theoretical term China English in his thesis named Issues on English-Chinese translation. He proposed that China English is the English that expresses ideas and things that specially connect with China, such as Four Books, eight-legged essays, May Forth Movement, Four Modernizations and so on. He pointed out that China English is Standard English but its background should be explained when introduced to native speakers of English. Many other scholars such as Li Wenzhong, Zhang Peicheng and Wang Peirong also proposed several versions of China English. Although different scholars have different definitions of China English, it is obvious that there are some features that most scholars shared in common about China English:① China English is a language variety of English based on Standard English that can be well accepted by English native speakers.② China English has Chinese characteristics and are mostly used to describe unique things of China, such as Chinese cultures and traditions, Chinese politics, Chinese social life, etc. ③ China English can help spread Chinese cultures to the rest of the world and arouse the sense of national identity of Chinese people.3. Definitions and features of ChinglishThe English word Chinglish is a portmanteau of Chinese and English. Chinglish comes into being when Chinese people begin to learn English. Professor Li Wenzhong proposes the definition of Chinglish——Chinglish is the queer and awkward English with Chinese structures produced by English learners in China and caused by the influence of Chinese. For instance, 我肚子很饿(I’m hungry). The Chinglish version is: My stomach is hungry.Chinglish has the following features:① Chinglish is different from Standard English in that it is misshapen, and grammatically wrong.② Chinglish is caused by Chinese structures and Chinese thinking model.③ Chinglish can be improved and corrected as it is caused by learners’ lack of proficiency in English.4. Similarities between China English and ChinglishChina English and chinglish have some features in common. China English and Chinglish are both influenced by Chinese. Here Chinese means more than just the Chinese language. It refers to following factors. First, China English and Chinglish are both influenced by Chinese thinking model. When starting to learn a language beside the mother tongue, it is inevitable to be influenced by the mother tongue. Second, both China English and Chinglish are influenced by the Chinese language, especially by the language structure. For example, the China English long time no see, and the Chinglish people mountain people sea (a huge number of people).5. Differences between China English and Chinglish5.1 Differences in the causes of formation China English results from vacancy of equivalence. As is illustrated above, China English focuses on the unique phenomenon of China. Ge Chuangui says in his article: “no matter in the past or in the new China, there are some expressions with Chinese characteristics we have to translate into English.”(Ge Chuangui. 1980:91) Since there are different cultures, politics, lifestyles in different countries, vocabulary varies according to cultures. But most of the time, there are no exactly the same expressions as in English, especially expressions to describe things unique in China. For instance, Cultural Revolution(文化大革命), Four Modernizations(四个现代化), Eight Dos and Don’ts(八荣八耻 ), etc.On the contrary, Chinglish is the mistake Chinese people make when learning English. It is mostly caused by their deficiency in mastering the correct En。
