1、 Synopsis Language is not only a symbol system but also a social phenomenon which is very closely related to human beings. The study of language and gender is concerned with how gender affects the ways in which humans use language. Gender is one of the key determiners of linguistic variation. Langua
2、ge and gender is one of the main subjects in sociolinguistic field. A large number of researches indicate that there exists differences in male and females language. They are different in language acquisition, linguistic competence, linguistic performance and other aspects. Furthermore, they explore
3、 the roots of such differences. On the basis of the former academic achievements, theories and empirical researches articulated by linguistic authorities, this thesis attempts to study and analyze gender differences in verbal style from sociolinguistic perspective. It aims to explore the causes and
4、influences of gender differences through various behaviors of verbal style and give some suggestions to avoid communicative failure in cross-gender communication. Researches indicate that there are considerable differences in male and females verbal style, such as topic selection, amount of speech a
5、nd verbal tactics. This thesis also elaborates the causes of gender difference in verbal style from physical, psychological, social and cultural factors. Understanding well about the differences between men and women in language use will benefit interpersonal communication in everyday life. There ar
6、e still some suggestions to avoid cross-gender miscommunication, such as identifying differences in language use, increasing mutual cognition and trying to be flexible. The study of verbal style of male and female aims to help people communicate effectively. With the knowledge of gender differences
7、in linguistic performance, it is easy to avoid miscommunication, and contributes to set up harmonious interpersonal relationships. 8、cipline which combines linguistics and sociology together. Scholars have attempted to apply the research methods and achievements of linguistics and other social sciences to study sociolinguistics. Method of statistical survey which is typically used in sociology was brought in to investigate the fe
9、atures of human language. Researches revealed that gender, age, status, profession and other factors have some certain effect on language use. Quantitative analysis indicates that gender factor influenced human speech act in some certain way. Language and gender have become one of the main subjects
10、in sociolinguistic field. Broadly speaking, gender language refers to that which is usually used by men and women or that which is characteristic of gender differences. Linguists from home and abroad dedicate significant amount of researches to prove that there really exist diversities for male and
11、female in language acquisition, linguistic competence and linguistic performance. Furthermore, they tried to explore the roots of such differences. Researches indicate that there are considerable differences in male and females verbal style. In topic selection aspect, males tend to select politics,
12、economics and sports as their topics and rarely involve in personal affairs, while females topics usually involve in personal and immediate affairs. The different topic selection inflects their respective interests, living conditions and social roles. That is to say, men traditionally have more impo
13、rtant social status, so they pay more attention to careers and serious matters, while womens society is regarded in the family, so they care more about family and matters of daily life. For quite a long time, people hold a general and stereotype of view that women talk more than men. However, that i
14、s not true in social communication. Almost all researches show that in most occasions, men speak more than women. The so called talkative women not really speak more, but comparing with silence, for people consider that women should keep silence and obedience in convention. There are differences in
15、verbal tactics for men and women language as well. Men tend to use dominant tactics such as interrupt and overlap to get turn-taking, whereas, women get weak tactics to behave more polite and cooperative. If their topics are interrupted, they tend to keep silence and rarely present protests. On the
16、contrary, men usually focus on their own opinions and merely mention the former topics. When talking with others, men dont give responses immediately and use minimal responses only when they agree with somebodys opinion, with an impression of lack of interest in the topics. Nevertheless, women are supposed to be the best listeners, who usually use minimal responses to participate in the conversation and show their interests in the topic, as well as respect and support to the speaker.
