What will be associated when people see the same colour? How to translate the colour words? This essay will focus on th
2、e associational meaning of the colour words and the methods used in translating the colour words.1 Colour Words Colour words are used to describe colour of things in language. With different environments, history and culture, the same colour has different associational meanings.1.1 Red 红色红色 This col
3、our is usually associated with celebration and joyful occasions. This is true in English-speaking countries as well as in China (邓炎昌 1989:64).People will hang a red flag during holidays or wear a red cloth in weddings. English people use a red carpet(红地毯) to welcome a VIP.A red carpet visitor(上宾) Th
4、e red-letter day means holidays such as Christmas and other special days. These days are printed in red on calendars, rather than in black for ordinary days.But, there is something different in China and in Western country Red stands for rich, prosperous and advance. For example,红墙碧瓦,开门红,红火.Generall
5、y, people in western countries do not like the colour of red. It means vulgarity, deficit, violence and disease. Red- necked(粗俗的红脖子乡巴佬),red-bricked(暴发户住的二流的红砖房),The Red May(1968 年 5 月巴黎学生动乱),go to the red(开始亏欠),一颗红心,a red heart would not be understand unless explained as loyal to the party, having s
6、ocialist virtues (邓炎昌,1989:66).1.2 Yellow 黄色黄色In Chinese, yellow is related to illness, warning, sadness and death. Many illness contain yellow. For instance,“舌苔泛黄,黄疸性肝炎“.Yellow blight(枯黄病),yellow fever(由热带病毒引 起的传染病),yellow flag(船上悬挂的表示海轮上有流行病的黄旗).Yellow used as warning, like yellow card, double yel
7、low lines.However, there are some differences.黄 in Chinese means old fashioned, illusory and failed. Like“明日黄花,陈年皇历,黄粱美梦,黄了(failing).Yellow represents treason and timid. Too yellow to stand up and fight(太胆怯而不敢站起来斗争),yellow belly(懦夫),yellow-bellied and yellow-livered are used to describe a cowardly m
8、an, a yellow streak(性格中的怯弱)(托马斯.朗, 1991:881).1.3 Black 黑色黑色One will think of dirty, illegal and serious when he mention black. We Chinese say“一身黑 汗,黑水,黑钱,黑市“ while western people say black sweet, black water, black money and black market.黑帮,黑社会 is a criminal organization. There are Black Hand(黑手党) a
9、nd Black Shirt(黑衫党) in foreign countries.Black villain(恶棍),black-hearted(黑心的),black mark(污点).Black is often connected with anger. Turn black with rage(气得脸铁青),blackbrowed reflects an angry expression and give somebody a black look means stare at somebody. We also take Chauser for an example. He is go
10、od at using the associated meaning of colour to express mans thoughts. He likes describe the sea with four words-blewe(blue),green wan and blake(black).The last one could show the terrible of the sea. Chauser do not like mountains ,so he describe them as “thise grisely feendly rockes blake“(这些狰狞的,恶魔
11、般的黑石头).It is very brilliant to put “black“ at the end of the sentence.(李赋宁,1995:100).1.4 Blue 蓝色蓝色Blue is integrated with royal family ,and it stands for the power of king. A blue=blooded family is a family with royal related. Blue Book(蓝皮书)is a report which is announced by English government. Navy
12、and policemen in England wearing blue uniform. So the boys in blue refer to policemen and sailor in English. In morden English. Blue is also means first-class and noble. Blue book(社会名人录),blue ribbon(授给比赛冠军),blue ribbon committee(一流的委员 会),blue ribbon jury(由德高望重的公民组成的陪审团).Blue is standing for illness
13、and lower reaches .For example, beat somebody black and blue(打得某人遍体鳞伤),blue baby(生下来有先天性心脏病浑身发青的婴儿),blue movie(色情 电影),blue joke(黄色笑话).Blue is connected with staunch and justice. Because the colour of sky is unchangeable. True blue describes faithful and dependable. In western culture, heaven is the
14、house of God , and God is the incarnation of justice. So blue and blue heaven have the associated meaning of truth.Blue brings people an unhappy feelings, too. A blue Monday-the first day of work or school after a pleasant, happy weekend.(邓炎昌,1989:68).1.5 Green 绿色绿色English people use green to descri
15、be unexperience, a green hand(刚入门的生手),as green as grass(天真,阅历浅),be not as green as one is cabbage-looking(表示并不像看上去那么单纯幼稚). Green is associated with money ,because dollar is green .Green power is the power of money. There is something difference. Green is also connected with woman and lewd in Chinese
16、. Such as “红男绿女,依红偎翠“.The window of a ladys room is called “绿窗“.A prostitues male relatives must wear a green scarf to show the low position in ancient time.绿帽子 refers to a man with a lewd wife. But, green does not have the same meaning in western culture. Green has the meaning of envy. “Do you see any green in my eye?“(你看见我吃醋了吗?).1.6 White 白色白色White is associated with pure, noble, illness and
