2、enowtakenthepresidentialoath.Thewordshavebee nspokenduringrisingtidesofprosperityandthestillwatersofpeace.Yet, everysooftentheoathistakenamidstgatheringcloudsandragingstorms. Atthesemoments,Americahascarriedonnotsimplybecauseoftheskillo rvisionofthoseinhighoffice,butbecausewethepeoplehaveremainedfa
3、ithfultotheidealsofourforebears,andtruetoourfoundingdocuments.Soithasbeen.SoitmustbewiththisgenerationofAmericans.Thatweareinthemidstofcrisisisnowwellunderstood.Ournationisatwa r,againstafar- reachingnetworkofviolenceandhatred.Oureconomyisbadlyweakene d,aconsequenceofgreedandirresponsibilityonthepar
4、tofsome,butalso ourcollectivefailuretomakehardchoicesandpreparethenationforanew age.Homeshavebeenlost;jobsshed;businessesshuttered.Ourhealthca reistoocostly;ourschoolsfailtoomany;andeachdaybringsfurtherevide ncethatthewaysweuseenergystrengthenouradversariesandthreateno urplanet.Thesearetheindicators
5、ofcrisis,subjecttodataandstatistics.Lessmeasu rablebutnolessprofoundisasappingofconfidenceacrossourlandanaggingfearthatAmericasdeclineisinevitable,andthatthenextgener ationmustloweritssights.TodayIsaytoyouthatthechallengeswefacearereal.Theyareseriousand theyaremany.Theywillnotbemeteasilyorinashortsp
6、anoftime.Butkno wthis,Americatheywillbemet.Onthisday,wegatherbecausewehavechosenhopeoverfear,unityofpur poseoverconflictanddiscord.Onthisday,wecometoproclaimanendtothepettygrievancesandfalsepr omises,therecriminationsandwornoutdogmas,thatforfartoolonghave strangledourpolitics.Weremainayoungnation,bu
7、tinthewordsofScripture,thetimehascome tosetasidechildishthings.Thetimehascometoreaffirmourenduringspi rit;tochooseourbetterhistory;tocarryforwardthatpreciousgift,thatnob leidea,passedonfromgenerationtogeneration:theGod- givenpromisethatallareequal,allarefreeandalldeserveachancetopurs uetheirfullmeas
8、ureofhappiness.Inreaffirmingthegreatnessofournation,weunderstandthatgreatnessis neveragiven.Itmustbeearned.Ourjourneyhasneverbeenoneofshortcu tsorsettlingforless.Ithasnotbeenthepathforthefaint-hearted forthosewhopreferleisureoverwork,orseekonlythepleasuresofriches andfame.Rather,ithasbeentherisk- ta
9、kers,thedoers,themakersofthings somecelebratedbutmoreoftenmenandwomenobscureintheirlabor,wh ohavecarriedusupthelong,ruggedpathtowardsprosperityandfreedom .Forus,theypackeduptheirfewworldlypossessionsandtraveledacrosso ceansinsearchofanewlife.Forus,theytoiledinsweatshopsandsettledtheWest;enduredthela
10、shoft hewhipandplowedthehardearth.Forus,theyfoughtanddied,inplaceslikeConcordandGettysburg;Norm andyandKheSahn.Timeandagainthesemenandwomenstruggledandsacrificedandworke dtilltheirhandswererawsothatwemightliveabetterlife.TheysawAmer icaasbiggerthanthesumofourindividualambitions;greaterthanallthed if
11、ferencesofbirthorwealthorfaction.Thisisthejourneywecontinuetoday.Weremainthemostprosperous,po werfulnationonEarth.Ourworkersarenolessproductivethanwhenthis crisisbegan.Ourmindsarenolessinventive,ourgoodsandservicesnoles sneededthantheywerelastweekorlastmonthorlastyear.Ourcapacityre mainsundiminished
12、.Butourtimeofstandingpat,ofprotectingnarrowin terestsandputtingoffunpleasantdecisions thattimehassurelypassed.Startingtoday,wemustpickourselvesup,dus tourselvesoff,andbeginagaintheworkofremakingAmerica.Foreverywherewelook,thereisworktobedone.Thestateoftheeconomy callsforaction,boldandswift,andwewill
13、act notonlytocreatenewjobs,buttolayanewfoundationforgrowth.Wewill buildtheroadsandbridges,theelectricgridsanddigitallinesthatfeedour commerceandbindustogether.Wewillrestoresciencetoitsrightfulplac e,andwieldtechnologyswonderstoraisehealthcaresqualityandloweritscost.Wewillharnessthesunandthewindsandt
14、hesoiltofuelourcarsand runourfactories.Andwewilltransformourschoolsandcollegesanduniv ersitiestomeetthedemandsofanewage.Allthiswecando.Allthiswewill do.Now,therearesomewhoquestionthescaleofourambitions whosuggestthatoursystemcannottoleratetoomanybigplans.Theirme moriesareshort.Fortheyhaveforgottenwh
15、atthiscountryhasalreadydo ne;whatfreemenandwomencanachievewhenimaginationisjoinedtoc ommonpurpose,andnecessitytocourage.Whatthecynicsfailtounderstandisthatthegroundhasshiftedbeneathth em thatthestalepoliticalargumentsthathaveconsumedusforsolongnolong erapply.Thequestionweasktodayisnotwhetherourgover
16、nmentistoobi gortoosmall,butwhetheritworks whetherithelpsfamiliesfindjobsatadecentwage,caretheycanafford,ar etirementthatisdignified.Wheretheanswerisyes,weintendtomovefor ward.Wheretheanswerisno,programswillend.Thoseofuswhomanage thepublicsdollarswillbeheldtoaccount tospendwisely,reformbadhabits,anddoourbusinessinthelightofday becauseonlythencanwerestorethevitaltrustbetweenapeopleandtheirg overnment.Noristhequestionbeforeuswhetherthemarketisaforceforgoodorill.Its powertogeneratew
