7、t heDeclarationofIndependence,theyweresigningapromissorynoteto whicheveryAmericanwastofallheir.Thisnotewasapromisethatallme n,yes,blackmenaswellaswhitemen,wouldbeguaranteedthe“unalienableRights“of“Life,LibertyandthepursuitofHappiness.“Itisobviousto daythatAmericahasdefaultedonthispromissorynote,inso

8、farashercitiz ensofcolorareconcerned.Insteadofhonoringthissacredobligation,Am ericahasgiventheNegropeopleabadcheck,acheckwhichhascomeback marked“insufficientfunds.“Butwerefusetobelievethatthebankofjusticeisbankrupt.Werefusetobe lievethatthereareinsufficientfundsinthegreatvaultsofopportunityofth isna

9、tion.Andso,wevecometocashthischeck,acheckthatwillgiveusup ondemandtherichesoffreedomandthesecurityofjustice.WehavealsocometothishallowedspottoremindAmericaofthefierceur gencyofNow.Thisisnotimetoengageintheluxuryofcoolingoffortotak ethetranquilizingdrugofgradualism.Nowisthetimetomakerealthepro miseso

10、fdemocracy.Nowisthetimetorisefromthedarkanddesolatevall eyofsegregationtothesunlitpathofracialjustice.Nowisthetimetoliftou rnationfromthequicksandsofracialinjusticetothesolidrockofbrotherh ood.NowisthetimetomakejusticearealityforallofGodschildren.Itwouldbefatalforthenationtooverlooktheurgencyofthemo

11、ment.This swelteringsummeroftheNegroslegitimatediscontentwillnotpassunti lthereisaninvigoratingautumnoffreedomandequality.Nineteensixty- threeisnotanend,butabeginning.AndthosewhohopethattheNegronee dedtoblowoffsteamandwillnowbecontentwillhavearudeawakeningif thenationreturnstobusinessasusual.Andther

12、ewillbeneitherrestnortra nquilityinAmericauntiltheNegroisgrantedhiscitizenshiprights.Thew hirlwindsofrevoltwillcontinuetoshakethefoundationsofournationunt ilthebrightdayofjusticeemerges.ButthereissomethingthatImustsaytomypeople,whostandonthewarmthresholdwhichleadsintothepalaceofjustice:Intheprocesso

13、fgainingou rrightfulplace,wemustnotbeguiltyofwrongfuldeeds.Letusnotseektos atisfyourthirstforfreedombydrinkingfromthecupofbitternessandhatr ed.Wemustforeverconductourstruggleonthehighplaneofdignityandd iscipline.Wemustnotallowourcreativeprotesttodegenerateintophysic alviolence.Againandagain,wemustri

14、setothemajesticheightsofmeetin gphysicalforcewithsoulforce.ThemarvelousnewmilitancywhichhasengulfedtheNegrocommunity mustnotleadustoadistrustofallwhitepeople,formanyofourwhitebroth ers,asevidencedbytheirpresenceheretoday,havecometorealizethatth eirdestinyistiedupwithourdestiny.Andtheyhavecometoreali
