1、Approved by vote of faculty 26 January 2012 1 GRADUATE INFORMATION GUIDE DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEGREE PROGRAM SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING PURDUE UNIVERSITY 1. Introduction The Ph.D. program in IE is designed to educate leading researchers and educators in industrial engineering. The material pre
2、sented in this guide is intended to serve as supplemental information to the document, titled “Policies and Procedures for Administrating Graduate Student Programs (henceforth referred to as Graduate School Policy).” (see Note 1.1) Note 1.1: The document can be found at http:/www.gradschool.purdue.e

Ph.D. Admission Applicants to the Ph.D. program are required to: Satisfy all of the admission requirements designated
4、 by Graduate School (see Graduate School Policy, Section III); Take the aptitude test sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE General Test); and Take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if the applicants native language is other than English or if the applicant does not hold a
5、 baccalaureate degree from a college or university of recognized standing that is located in the USA. Successful applicants to the Ph.D. program usually: Maintain a GPA of 3.4 or better on a 4.0 scale during their previous graduate work; Have GRE test scores of at least 470 Verbal, 700 Quantitative
6、and 4.5 Analytical; and Have scores of at least 570 (paper-based total) or 220 (computer-based total) in the TOEFL. 3. Degree Requirements In order to receive a Ph.D. degree, Ph.D. students are required to (see Note 3.1): Have an approved plan of study filed with the Graduate School (see Section 6);
7、 Approved by vote of faculty 26 January 2012 2 Have at least 90 total graduate credit hours (Graduate School Policy, Section IV, B) (see Note 3.2); Have at least two continuous regular (non-summer) semesters of full-time study on the campus of Purdue University; Obtain a grade of C or better on ever
8、y course listed in the plan of study; Obtain an overall GPA of 3.0 or better on all courses taken at Purdue beyond the masters degree; Pass a preliminary examination based on a written research proposal in the specific area of research; and Successfully defend a dissertation in a final examination.
9、In addition, Ph.D. students admitted to the “direct Ph.D.” program are required to: Complete all other requirements listed under the Direct Ph.D. Program guidelines. Note 3.1: Deviations from the requirements above require written authorization from the Head, School of Industrial Engineering. (Requi
10、rements associated with the Graduate School require authorization from both the Graduate School and the Head.) Note 3.2: The 90 total credit hours may include regular courses credits, research credits, and credits transferred from one previous masters or professional degree. At least one-third of th
11、e total credit hours should be earned while being registered as a Ph.D. student at Purdue University. 4. Registration Ph.D. students are required to: Complete their registration for the first semester with the students assigned graduate advisor or with the associate head for graduate studies; Comple
12、te their registration for subsequent semesters with the students major professor(s); and Register for the Graduate Seminar (IE 697) in every semester (see Note 4.1). Note 4.1: IE 697 consists of a series of seminars on the current practice of industrial engineering and relevant research topics. Ph.D
13、. students are recommended to: Register for the necessary prerequisite and core courses along with those courses leading to advance study in the specific area of interest to the student in the first semester. 5. Advisory Committee Ph.D. students are required to: Identify an Advisory Committee. Appro
14、ved by vote of faculty 26 January 2012 3 The Advisory Committee is required to (see Note 5.1): Consist of four members, at least three of whom must be members of the regular graduate faculty (see Note 5.2); Include one major professor or two co-major professors, who is/are the chair/co-chairs of the
15、 advisory committee; Include at least one major professor from the School of Industrial Engineering; Include at least one member other than the major professor from the School of Industrial Engineering (two major professors from the School of Industrial Engineering would satisfy this requirement); I
16、nclude at least one member from outside the field of industrial engineering. Note 5.1: Deviations from the requirements are generally not allowed, but in any case would have to be approved by the Graduate School and the Head, School of Industrial Engineering. Note 5.2: Members of the Purdues regular graduate faculty are tenure-track faculty members at Purdue University who have been
