7、my friends who have given me assistance in various aspects while I was trying to finish this thesis. ii Abstract Since the appearance of the “cultural turn” in the field of literary translation in the 1970s, scholars in this field from both China and abroad have shifted their attention from the pers

8、pective of linguistics to that of culture. Consequently, translators subjectivity and cultural identity have become a significant topic for studies on literary translation. Translators, as the principal part of translation, is always affected by his/her subjectivity throughout the process of transla

9、tion, and his/her translating goal and subjectivity finally determines his/her translation methods and strategies. This thesis explores the influences of the subjectivities of Pearl S. Buck and Sidney Shapiro on their translation of Shui Hu Zhuan from the perspective of translators subjectivity. Shu

10、i Hu Zhuan, as one of Chinas Four Great Classical Novels, has been translated into many languages. Pearl S. Bucks All Men Are Brothers and Sidney Shapiros Outlaws of the Marsh are the most popular versions among all English translations. Previous studies on these two English versions focus on the de

11、bate between domestication translation and foreignization translation. Different from previous studies, this thesis takes the approach of translators subjectivity through a comparison between these two versions. In particular, it focuses on three aspects, namely, the central position and the leading

12、 role of the translator, the influence of translators consciousness on translation and the influence of social environment on a translator. Furthermore, the thesis interprets the aspects of translators subjectivity as iii reflected in these two versions of Shui Hu Zhuan. This thesis consists of five

13、 chapters. Chapter One introduces the background, purpose and significance of this research and basic structure of this thesis. Chapter Two offers a literature review of the studies on the translators status from a humble position in the past to a subjective status at present, explains the definitio

14、n of the translators subjectivity, and discusses three factors that influence the subjectivity of a translator. Chapter Three deals with the background information of the two translators and values their English versions of Shui Hu Zhuan. Chapter Four, the main body of this thesis, explores the tran

15、slators subjectivity as is reflected in their translation of Shui Hu Zhuan through a comparison of the titles, nicknames, figures of speech, culturally-loaded words, proverbs and idioms. It also analyzes factors of the translators subjectivity that contribute to these similarities and differences. C

16、hapter Five is a brief retrospective summary of the main arguments discussed in previous chapters. Based on the comparative study of these two versions, this thesis argues that the translators subjectivity is a critical factor that determines the success of a translation. Moreover, because Pearl S. Buck and Sidney Shapiro have different cultural identities
