10、性研究。五十年代这一研究引起霍根( H a u g e n ) 和 万瑞茨 ( W e i n r e i c h ) 等社会语言学家的注意，中国亦有许多学者针对汉 语中借用的英语成分进行探讨并取得了一定成果。例如香港话 借用英语词汇的研究 ， 英语在汉语中的两面性：汉语英化和英 语汉化以及高明凯等编纂的汉语外来词词典 。随着时间的 推移，越来越多的外来词被借入汉语, 其中英语外来词的数量最 多。在历史上汉语曾借用过英语词, 但与现代汉语相比，无论是 在借用范围还是在借用程度方面都相差甚远。如今，英语词多得 几乎可以在现代汉语的任何领域中找到，因此有必要从理论上对 汉语借用英语词汇的现状及其规
11、律进行研究。本文旨在把借用作 为一种语言行为，一种语言接触现象，一种既得的利益，采用社 会语言学的方法对其进行研究和探讨。 本文不仅努力展现汉语借用英语的全貌，对其进行历史回顾 而且从社会文化角度展开理论分析。事实上，借用英语词汇的问 题不仅局限于汉语。由于英语外来词越来越多地出现在不同的语 言里，因而不同国家的学者都一直关注这种现象。因此，本文所 讨论的内容将有助于世界各国对借用英语词汇现象的研究。 本文除引言和结论之外共有四章。第一章从总体上分析词汇 的借用，阐述其概念及研究方法；第二章探讨汉语中英语外来词 的状况；第三章着重分析汉语借用英语词汇的动机；第四章讨论 借用的语言功能、社会作用
12、及其价值。 事实上，借用是一个有争议的术语。 语言学家叶斯柏森( O t t o J e s p e r s o n ) , 法索德( F a s o l d ) ， 霍根( H a u g e n ) 等人都发现这个 词的不尽人意，会使人产生误解。在所有的语言借用行为中，借 用者不论对其所借的语言项目是否进行了本土化改造都根本无 意归还。然而，目前仍在进行的研究之所以还采用借用这一术语 主要是因为对这个词的使用已经约定俗成，并且使用方便。本文Thesis - 8 - 主要紧采用社会语言学的研究方法。由此，在研究汉语借用英语 词汇的问题时，社会和文化因素被置于突出位置。 汉语有着相当长的借用历史，总的说来，有三次高潮：第一 次在汉唐时期；第二次是从 1 9 世纪中叶至2 0 世纪中叶；第三次 是从 1 9 7 8年至今。在
