Tsui (The University of Hong Kong )This paper explores the challenges that globalization has posed to the teacher education. It begins by exploring how gl
11、obalization has challenged the traditional conception of learning as the acquisition of a body of knowledge. It points out that to respond to the intensity and immediacy of information transmission and knowledge generation, and to cope with the multi-faceted complexity of new knowledge, it is essent
12、ial for us to engage in collective knowledge generation by participating in communities of practice and crossing community boundaries. It outlines recent research on teacher education that has drawn on theories of learning, such as a social theory of learning as participation and Activity Theory, a
13、neo-Vygotskian theory of learning, to make sense of the forms of learning that teachers engage in. To elucidate these concepts, case studies on the learning that took place in the context a school-university partnership will be used. They illustrate how concepts in Activity Theory and theories of le
14、arning as social participation have been used to illuminate the data. This paper concludes that in order to cope with the challenges of globalization, it is essential to develop the capability to engage in solving problems which are ill-defined, to negotiate the object of an activity system which is
15、 poorly understood, to explore new roles, and to form new relationships. It is this capability that lies at the heart of the adage “learning to learn”.
