1、Chinese-Specific Words and Their TranslationChapter 1: IntroductionWith the overall development of the Chinese economy, new things and new phenomena appear constantly, especially showed in the politics, economy, science and social life. Accordingly, a large number of rich and special words emerge. C

2、hinese culture-loaded words are becoming increasingly important, referring to the uniqueness of Chinese items, and of course, contain the connotation of Chinese culture. Chen Yuan has ever pointed that any new things in social life, such as new systems, new structures, new ideas and new concepts do

3、everything possible to be manifested in the language. If they do not show up, they cannot play a communicative role in social life. Words are the miniature of changing times and social progress and they are the clear mirrors of social development. Chinese-specific words are native and their continuo

4、us emergence is the result of Chinas social development and progress.1The Chinese-specific words and their translations have made some great achievements. Some journals open up columns to publish the translation of political and economic words, in which there are considerable Chinese-specific words

5、and their translation. The website of China Daily also opens up a column of words with latest translations, especially providing the corresponding translation of hot words. The new C/E dictionaries compiled are impressive. There are rich entries in these dictionaries, including the new Chinese-speci

6、fic words and the loanwords which have entered Chinas society and become peoples commonly used language. Recently, a series of lexical books on the translation of Chinese-specific words have been publi shed. With Chinas economic development, increasing international influence, as well as the continu

7、ing expansion of foreign exchange, the reports on the political, economic and cultural aspects of Chinas society often appear in foreign newspapers and magazines. For instance, two of USAs most influential magazinesTime and 2Newsweek both focus on Chinas development. Recently they publish Chinas spe

8、cial issue from time to time. Some scholars, therefore, pay attention to how foreign media translate the Chinese-specific words. Objectively speaking, it is possible to refer to or even take some translations from the English media, but it is wise to avoid blind copy, especially the translation of s

9、ome political terms which involve the political orientation of China and western countries.2 Chapter 2: The Sources of Chinese-Specific WordsThe Chinese-Specific Words are very abundant, which are mainly from new concepts, strong economy, strong dialect and Loanwords.2.1 New concepts As a lot of new

10、 discoveries, new things and new concepts emerge in the modernization of China, the words reflecting these new concepts appear too. These words are from neither the traditional culture of Chinese society, nor western loanwords. They are typical new concepts with Chinese features and from the linguis

11、tic point of view they reflect the unique changes in all social areas of China which is in the process of integration with the world. In political field there are 与时俱进(to keep up with the times),三个代表(the Three Represents),反腐倡廉(anti-corruption and building a clear government); in economic field, ther

12、e are thousands of Chinese-specific words, such as 紧缩(austerity), 打假(anti-fraud),抢购(panic buying); the words reflecting new entertainment concepts are 美食城(food center), 健康城(healthy club), 第三者(a third partner); others like 透明度(openness), 随身听(walkman). Such examples are endless. The translation of the

13、se words is the window of the newest social form of China. The accuracy of their translation shoulders the responsibility of delivering the latest information of Chinese society and culture to the world. Translation should also be cautious, and there is a long way to go.2.2 Strong economyThe core of

14、 Reform and Opening up is to adjust Chinese economic structure, and the biggest contribution of this policy is economic growth. The change of economic structure has a deep and strong effect on all aspects of the society. In most areas of social life, economic increase has become the only standard of

15、 success and 3excellence. At this point, language is no exception. The return of Hong Kong, one of the well-known Four Little Dragons in Asia, unites Guangdong and Hong Kong because of the latters outstanding economic development, making the Pearl River delta the head of Chinese economy. Guangdong a

16、nd Hong Kong then become the heart of this strong economic region. Due to the influence of strong economy, many words with their local features in the dialects of Guangdong and Hong Kong spread quickly to the north. These words become the ones with Chinese features. The common ones are 度假村(holiday villa), 资深(senior), 做秀(to show). The words originally restricted to Guangdong and Hong Kong, have entered the interior of the mainland and have been gradually imitat
