10、died in Little WomenLiu XiaoboLouisa May Alcott is an important American writer of stories reflecting colonial life in New England. Little Women is her masterpiece in this respect. It is worth serious study.Previous studies of this novel mostly focused on the feminist approach, psychological approac
11、h and the perspective of biblical studies, etc. Indeed, these aspects are very important features of the novel. However, it seems to me that two sources of central American values, namely puritanism and transcendentalism, are too important to be overlooked. Therefore this thesis tries to give an in-
12、depth analysis of the major themes in Little Women from the perspective of Puritanism and Transcendentalism.On the other hand, regionalism with local color and humor is a key tone of American realism. Alcott in her masterpiece presents a locale in New England distinct from other parts of America. Sh
13、e describes the picturesque landscape such as the extended meadows and dense forests. She also glorifies the past 一something lost in the process of urbanization. Previous studies of local colorism mainly focused on writers like Mark Twain, who came from regions other than New England. This prompts m
14、e to study the local color of Little Women.This thesis has carried out the study of Little Women from both thematic and artistic perspectives. First of all, it reveals in what way Louisa May Alcott was influenced by Puritanism and Transcendentalism by demonstrating the puritanical and transcendental
15、ist elements embodied in the novel under discussion. The puritanicalelements highlighted include religious piety, industry and self-sufficiency, and optimism and pragmatism while the transcendentalist elements examined are the Oversoul, individualism and self-reliance. In addition to thematic studie
16、s, the thesis also discusses the narrative technique of local colorism manifested in the book.
